silpig5
are they not the same as cats , deemed as free spirits , so there is no way you can get compensation from the owner ?? Edited April 12, 2012 by silpig5
cockercas
but you carnt legally shoot them when there racing (or can you ) or at least everyone on here starts moaning if you mention it.
stubby
but you carnt legally shoot them when there racing (or can you ) or at least everyone on here starts moaning if you mention it. they would have to be landing in your garden, and either causing a public health risk, or destroying crops/plants for you to legally shoot them, after you have shown all other methods to keep them away have failed so no

I had assumed that it only applied to wild birds? One would presume that if they birds are making a mess of someone elses property there would be a claim against the owner for damages. Theoretically speaking, that is, as I wouln't fancy your chances of a successful legal action. J.

Not like you making assumptions! - Also includes Feral pigeons (By definition, see wording of GL) - now there lies the crunch, when does a racer "go feral" is it once it lands to feed? - that is the grey area. Are they sat on the washing line, or just flying over and using her bedsheets as a target? er because i have things in my head called eyes. i can see the rings on there legs when they land on the ridge tiles. there ringed birds but dont act like racers. they like to lull on the ridge/aerials/garage roof and eat of the old woman's bird table. must cost her a few ££££s in bird seed. cockercas
sometimes its like explaining things to children on here. when the birds fly around they poo (i kid you not, they really do) so when the fly around the old womans garden, from ridge to garage roof to bird feeder back to ridge so on and so on they poo. now when the old lady has her washing out, some poo land on the nice clean washing. the pigeons dont do it on purpose (pigeons dont know the difference between right and wrong) i can get my son do draw a picture of it if you like.
al4x
simply I'd shoot them as well, however it does pose the interesting thing that to find the owner you'd have to shoot them send the ring off to find the owner and then send the bill. Not sure many would pay up though

welshwarrior
Speaking to an old boy whos racing pigeons his view is they land or hang around to feed they are not good racers and not worth his feed so shoot them. His view was the ones doing there job where to high to shoot with a shotgun so where safe unless your a crack shot. Dirty Harry
I found a shot racing pigeon once! Looked just like a feral to me. Anyway I worked out from the ring that the bird was 10 years old and came from Cheltenham. It had obviously 'gone rogue' as it had been hanging round the farm with the other ferals eating my wheat and crapping over all the machines. I think if they won't scare off and keep coming back then they are not good racers. Harry

Vince Green
Racing pigeons go back to their roost, thats the whole idea. They don't hang around on roof tops, unless the owner lives a few doors either way they are feral.

Once they' have been abandonned/ gone ferral neither act will apply.
