Are you a gun snob ?

There seems to be a bit of misconception about snobbery on here. Shooting with a Browning, Beretta, Miroko, Purdey etc does not make you a snob, it makes you someone who has spend more on a gun than is strictly needed to hit targets, it's a personal choice. Snobbery is where these people look down at the person with a Hatsan, Belgian gun, Baikal etc because that gun is cheaper than theirs.

I don't look up to people who shoot more expensive guns, I look at them and think 'they're doing OK, they can afford a nice gun which they like with a nice piece of wood on it and some nice engraving.' I don't think any more of them, nor would I think any less of someone who turns up with a lesser gun (I admit that's hard, as I shoot old Belgian guns, a Hatsan, BRNO and an old Ruger, but you get the point!).

It can be funny on the rare occasions that snobs are looking down on a gun, which then beats them, that can be funny to watch.

Give me one good reason why a self loader shouldnt be used on clays or driven shooting.

Harnser .

Its just my view

Driven game has a tradition and I think there's nothing worse than seeing someone with an auto slung over their shoulder on their peg

Clay and game you should only have 2 shots I see two many using 3 shots even though the local clay ground has a rule of 2 round if you want to use a semi

I have a semi auto but see them as a gun to use when others aren't around or you in a hide

I can see why Hatsans sell but for me I would rather by good quality tried and test second-hand at the same money! I have no problem with people owning them its just not the way I would spend my money and I wouldnt advise anyone else to either!

Am with Harnesser I dont think there should be such dim views taken of semis on driven shoots esp small DIY syndicates etc. All the dangerous things I have seen happen so far with shotguns has been a SXS every time, usually by someone who isnt paying attention, normally muzzle awareness and once I saw a chap arrive at his next peg to shoot and when he took his gun out of his slip and broke it to load it there was already 2 live cartridges in that he had left in from his last peg! As long as your safe and proficient in handling your firearm there should be no worry and people should mind there own business and enjoy the day! If folk want to spilt hairs over tradition then we would all be shooting black powder muzzle loaders! As with everything there has to be movement with the times to survive. This year I have a pump and a semi so its also meant I wont be spending any of my hard earned £`s on game shooting this year because what I have isnt deemed suitable to participate with, I see it as the industrys loss not mine !

THESE ARE JUST MY THOUGHTS AND OPINIONS AND NOT PUT HERE TO ANTAGONISE OR STIR / CAUSE TROUBLE.

I have shot driven game on several occations with a self loader and they are a perfectly good peg gun . My preference on the peg is a nice fast moving sxs game gun of which I have a couple of nice ones . Any body loading 3 shells in a self loader on a clay ground is a fool and is breaking the grounds rules . The self loader is as good a clay gun as any other gun . I use my self loader for pigeon shooting mainly as a hide gun but I will use it for any type of shooting that might tickle my fancy ,no I dont hide up to shoot my self loader it if there is any body else around .

Here we go again! Popcorn, anyone?

Just for my tenpenn'orth, I don't care what you shoot in practice, as long as you show good gun safety, I am not showered with hot cartridges, and you pick up after yourself. I even don't mind if people use/waste 3 cartridges from a semi on a clay, as long as they are on their own and not in a squad, having said that, rules are rules! As far as what gun you shoot - if you have enough money for a Purdey, I can see the pride of ownership in such a beautiful object, just as I can see the pride in shooting well with a less expensive gun, it is only the act of treating others with contempt that is snobbery!

Am I a gun snob? Definitely not. I have cheap guns I don't shoot very well, but they are what I can afford at the moment and that's that.

Do I have gun envy? Oh yes! I'd love to have an expensive gun. It probably wouldn't improve my averages, practice is what's needed there, but I'd know it's a nice gun and I'd know others know it's a nice gun and that would be pleasureable for me in much the same way as owning a nice car is.

Similar situation to mongrel above! I shoot what i can afford at the minute, it allows me to get out and shoot! In the future I hope to own a much nicer, more valuable gun, and enjoy owning and the personal sence of achiement gain from working hard to own it! And all the previous lead thats gone down earlier cheap guns will be as eually fond memeories!

Jealousy is a disease, if a man turns up at a shoot with a cracking shotgun odds are he's worked for it and saved for it, it doesn't matter if he can shoot or not, maybe he spends too much time working to practice but that's his choice. You might spend your wages on a nice car, holiday, or in the pub - he spent his on his dream gun.

Remember, you could have that gun too if you'd worked harder or saved better.

I don't think jealousy is such the problem when the man buys these wonderfully guns and then the next day is at his brothers wanting to borrow money because he can't pay his bills.

I'd rather be sensible and buy what is realistic.

To fair if I had enough free cash I probably would by a pair of purdeys but certainly not if it meant my bills were not paid.

I wouldn’t say that’s a gun snob, if he/she is an investment banker with loads of disposable income it’s only the same as someone who stacks shelves spending a few hundred pounds on a gun, it’s all relative to their income.

A snob in my eyes is someone who passes judgment on someone’s gun without good reason and it works both ways.

If someone buys a Purdey and looks down on your AYA he is a snob as much as if some who can shoot but looks down on Mr investment banker because he has a Purdey and cannot hit anything.

If you think a gun is cheap and unreliable or an extremely over priced piece of **** that’s not a snob either, that’s just an opinion on the gun.

But if you laugh at someone because they turn up with a cheap gun or expensive one and cannot shoot well, then that is a snob because you are linking the gun to the person.

100% agreement. Snobbery isnt about what you do or don't have. It is about seeing what someone else has (Baikal or Purdey) and then looking down on them because of it.

Car snobs are better than gun snobs anyway. If someone is crass enough to open with something like 'so what are you driving at the moment?' just evade it and ask them what they are (because that's what they want to talk about anyway) and when they tell you, ask what colour it is.

When they answer just say 'I don't like blue/black/red etc cars' then turn your back and start talking to someone else.

Pulled off correctly its hilarious.

Gun snobbery is not about owning nice guns ,but looking down on those who cannot afford to own top of the range guns .

Harnser .

I agree,i have shooting buddies who own cheap guns and shoot very well with them :good:

Not to bothered on the make or price but I personally do not like to see semi autos being used on clays and driven game

What are they supposed to use then.

I use to shoot clays in wales where one of the guys had a silver plated O/U, it looked nice but like everything it will only sit in the cabinet unseen for most of the time.

As some of you are aware i use to be a gun snob, obviously thinking i was better then all of you but since selling the escort semi and buying the beretta, i have now come more down to earth

sorry :P
