four-wheel-drive
Two carriers Type 45 Destroyer Eurofighter F-35 fighters Trident Which of those will be useful fighting a war like Afghanistan? Which of those currently exists in an operational role? For a start we should not be in Afghanistan in the first place if we spent a fraction of the money on home defence we would not need to be there. Our forces should be there to protect this island not police the world we are an island so we need ships and planes etc to defend us not vast numbers of solders. Finally why is it that we have more officers and higher rank people in are forces than any other country in the world I have herd it said that we have more than the Americans have and there forces are much much larger than ours and that is where a lot of the money goes. I say amalgamate most of the regiments we need to move in to the modern world tradition is all well and good in its place but it all comes at a cost and that is not cheep. Nial
Quite true, but it is the Tories who have decided to make such swingeing cuts in so short a time frame. They could have significantly lessened the economic and social impact if they had spread the cuts over a further two years. But in the interim the countries debt would have increased further. Having said that I'm not sure I agree with cutting the armed forces this drastically, at some point their capability will be so reduced that it won't be worth having them. I've heard the tories aren't actually cutting spending, just not increasing the growth the way labour were going to. It would be interesting to see a pie chart of where it's all going. Matty7247
Camo clothing is new, and years too late!! We needed decent gear years ago, Body armour, Troops on the ground still need to share? Groin protection is a new idea, the Americans have used it for years?? The SA80 was updated years ago by Heckler & Koch. The New vehicles again are years to late!! The Troops on the ground needed these 15 years ago. It all comes down to cost cutting, the MOD are the easiest for governments too attack, and they are the first to suffer Budget cuts. Troops that put ther lives on the line, deserve the equipment they deserve, and the pay they deserve, they should be payed in line with Firefighters/Policemen etc.
Livefast123
There should be a hierachy of cuts and the goverment have got it criminally wrong. Before they cut the budgets of our brave armed forces maybe they should consider :- 1. Overseas Aid 2. Massive benefits bills 3. EU contributions and membership 4. Troops should be brought home to protect GB They are leaving us open to attack and saying to the rest of the world, take any GB territory you want as we won't bother defending it. It's an insult to those that have made the ultimate sacrifice over the years.
bruno22rf
I dont understand what all the fuss is about-we might be incapable of defending ourselves against anyone more powerfull than the smurfs-we might even be facing financial meltdown that will make the great depression look like a girls tiff-we may,if we are lucky,be able to spend more years working before we can retire so that we can maintain the living standards of countless croatian pimps, but lets not forget, girls and boys, that on monday we can all stand and wave our union jacks at the olympic torch. chrispti
Just been chatting to a few mates who are still serving. They seem to be looking forward to redundancy, full pensions and a handsome payout. Plus the added resettlement for them to re trade. A smaller army can only equal quicker tour turn around, 6 months on tour 6 months off possibly? Then the government expect the TA to make up the numbers, I doubt many ex regs will want anything to do with the military after they are made redundant, there for loosing years of valuable experience, only leaving inexperienced stabs. I have the pleasure of knowing a few stabs who have done their fair share of war fighting, I'm sure the Gareth's still exsist but there is a much larger operational commitment these days within Territorial units. As for these cuts, I try not to think about it because I don't want to be grey before I am 30. For reference, this is a Gareth.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wx0ZIqoiaUI

Uncle Albert
Absolutely disgusting cutting the forces. In 82 the government sold off two carriers. What happened? The Argies invaded the Falklands. Now they are doing the same again. The only difference now is we ain't got any Harriers, we ain't got a carrier and pretty soon we w2on't have any troops to go and recapture the islands. Ah, the governmet say the Argies won't invade now. I despair sometimes. The government is too busy filling their pockets with OUR money to worry about the country.
amateur
It's all a disgrace, but will someone please explain to me why the brigade of Gurkas is not part of the cuts? Why they hell are we sacrificing British troops in favour of Nepalise? Madness Political correctness innit, Oh, and the fear of Joanna Lumley biting the decision-makers. Apparently the Scottish Regiments are only keeping up to strength by recruiting Fijians - so perhaps the Ghurkas could be directed to the Jocks. scolopax
Well do not renew Trident and spend it on the conventional arms instead ie get the two aircraft cariers commissioned and in service asap. I am not saying do away with a nuclear deterrent, but just keep Trident, so long as the subs do not get as far as sinking we will still have a capability. wymberley
Helmand Province,July 2012.A British infantry Regiment, the 21st Foot and Mouth. " WE NEED MORE `******* AMMUNITION. We`re about to be over run!!" And if a few squaddies die in the process, who cares. Nothing new there then. Northumberland Fuseliers, Crater, Aden 1967. mudpatten
Still, the Tories are doing their best to get us out of the fiscal mire. They have cast the economic chicken bones and determined that a tax on pasties is the way forward. A tax on pasties.I ask you! Oh! Wait a minute. No, they misread the chicken bones and the pasty tax is off. So the chicken bones were wrong. What will it be next time? Reading the future in a sheep`s entrails. Why they don`t stick to the traditional crystal ball I do not know. Tories.Dishonest, despicable, heartless, selfish intellectual pygmies. The Reg-TA banter is really healthy, I reckon it helps both sides up their respective games. Tories.Dishonest, despicable, heartless, selfish intellectual pygmies.
