Wildfowler
Having tried it in the chamber a few times it was quite tight but difficult to get in due to the bass of the bar so i cut it off
Wildfowler
I put it back up and turned the head , i had to put it back up a few times to polish off a bit at the open end to ensure it is a nice snug fit, this will help stop it splitting when fired Here it is at home in the chamber Here it is next to a 12g cartridge to give it some perspective / scale As soon as i get the primers i'll put the pocket in for it. I'll make another one during the week
welshwarrior
That's cheating you used a 2 /12" cartridge to make it look longer lol

Chris Bb
We had a work party down the marsh this morning so didn't start until late. This is where ill be using it though... IMG_2640.JPG 1 As an ex marsh dweller I'd forgotten just how I love the sight of a long, low horizon. 2 Love the cartridge, that's going to make one big bang! How are you going to extract it? I don't know the difference in heat expansion ratios between brass & steel but could that cause problems? Great project & write up. Enjoying every "episode". Wildfowler
that cartridge is quite simply b.e.a.utiful. this projects stated before i got on the forum, i actually made an account just to post on this topic. glad ive stuck by watching. this build is huge and very cool! i have not got much knowledge on punt guns and the law. but what will you shoot it at? fudd Thanks... I'm pleased it interested you enough to join the forum! 1 As an ex marsh dweller I'd forgotten just how I love the sight of a long, low horizon. 2 Love the cartridge, that's going to make one big bang! How are you going to extract it? I don't know the difference in heat expansion ratios between brass & steel but could that cause problems? Great project & write up. Enjoying every "episode". Post 601 covers extraction, but basically a tapped hole in the cartridge head and a threaded tool to pull it out. As the heat is instantaneous and only for a split second, the expansion due to heat is of little concern (which is why most cartridges can be made of plastic), the main issue is expansion due to chamber pressure, hence a snug fit to avoid the cartridge swelling. I've made a number of 8 bore cartridges in the past, all of which were successful and didn't get stuck, so fingers crossed this one works! If it gets stuck i'll knock it out with the cleaning rod and polish a bit more material off... May I ask which club, Colchester, Tollesbury?? I'm a member of Colchester but that picture is taken over Tendring and Halstead Wildfowlers ground Edited August 19, 2013 by Wildfowler
Catweazle
Just a thought, would it be possible to make the cartridge from copper pipe with the head soldered on ? Might be easier.
Wildfowler
The cartridges aren't difficult to make really... Probably easier than soldering, etc. not sure I'd get the same fit or finish either. I got the brass cheap so that isn't a concern... That's not to say it wouldn't work...? Wildfowler
My good lady wife picked up some .380 blanks for me today so i bored the pocket in the head of the cartridge and test fired it... (i also made a new closing thumb screw out of stainless, you can see it in the video) Here is the head of the cartridge Edited August 20, 2013 by Wildfowler
Wildfowler
I had the FEO visit yesterday for my black powder certificate. All went well and apparently I can expect to receive it before the end of the week... He also took care of the 'transfer' of the punt gun onto my SGC. As soon as i get the black powder certificate through i can start to test fire it properly!

happypig
A suggestion for this thread...,. Is there any way if re posting without our comments..... Perhaps a locked thread to wildfowler so we can just see the progress from start to finish in a glorious punt fest..... It would be a fitting tribute to the process and we would get our fix of punt porn without having to read extra comments??!

SSS
I'm going to ask what might turn out to be a dumb question. Why do you use black powder not nitro in a punt gun? Surely nitro would give you better ballistics and a nicer, clean burn. Is it just a traditional thing?
fieldwanderer
Just shew my dad this, he told me about someone he used to work with (50s ish at a guess) who made one, he took the gun to the proof house from Colchester on the roof of his mini! How time have changed eh? I could do with one on the roof of my lorry! I'd cast my own slugs.....
