cocker3
on friday i went grouse beating for a keeper that has just given me 2500 acres of deer stalking (nice to be nice ) 5 drives 200 brace and one very nackered cocker3 ! .it rained all day and for those who havent been to the grouse there is bog all to hind behind to get out the rain up on the hill so to say i was wet through was a slight understatement any way after a very long sleepin on saturday i headed out to see if i could find some pigeons i looked round the fields at my shoot 3 rape fields cut and not a pigeon to be seen so it was on the phone to a few farmers and got the good news that one farm had been cut and there were birds on the field . i arrived to find 500 +feeding so sat and watched for five minutes but i have a good idea of the flight lines on this farm so set up on a strip of wood that splits two rape fields 20 minutes later i had 6 down and then a tractor pulled into the farm aw **** and all the other bad words under the sun the farm workers had come to top the fields off as they are going to direct sown the fields . i packed up have moved off with my bottom lip quivering i looked round for a further hour but could only find very small groups of pigeons at 3pm my phone went and it was the farmer who.s field i had just left he informed me that the tractors were out of the big field now and would not be back today i will be there in 5 minutes was all he needed to here this time i st up with 25 shells and three bouncers and the magnet with the second magnet tucked away in the hedge just incase .from the off they would not decoy so i removed the magnet and bingo they stared to drop in i was shooting really well with 30 dropping without a shot missed in the first 45 minutes and some really good wide crossers being taken at 4.30 it was time to pack up as the flight had slowed up and it was very hot by this time 23c it took 30 miutes to pick up all the birds as i didnt want too work the dogs too hard in the heat giving them a drink half way through picking up they were nackered (remember they were at the grouse the day before )i picked 79 and think i lost about 15 in the surrounding fields and the wood behind me so all in all a good couple of hours on the way home i stopped off at a small river that i pass on the way home and gave the dogs a half hour play in the water to cool them down
