Cosd
With my first wildfowling experience looming, we're planning a three day shooting trip to Scotland where we will be going for pinkfoot and greylags. My question is this, my preferred shotgun is my Benelli semi auto, but it doesn't take 3" carts. I could take an O/U which does have 3" chambers but prefer the semi. Can I use 70mm carts for geese or ducks? Or do I have to use 3" carts? Cos
-Mongrel-
You can use 70mm for ducks for sure, I use Gamebores Super Steels in shot size 3. I did get some Heavishot from Just Cartridges for Geese last year but can't remeber what they were, will edit when I do remember. Ok, tell a lie, it was Tungsten Matrix in shot size 1. http://gamebore.com/...tungsten-matrix Not cheap though at about £3.00 a cart! Terry P
If your shooting inland you can us lead in scotland, so you can get some heavy leads, but if on the foreshore its gotta be non toxic so personally i'd use the 3" on the foreshore. ayano3
A guy at my snooker club actually asked me if if could put 3" cartridges in his 2. 3/4 Winchester 101 because he had tried them in the chamber and they actually fitted !!! Some people shouldn't own guns...don't try this at home comes to mind. I would look to use the 3" with some BBB if its steel proofed. kent
if its in a legal to use lead area use the auto, if not 3" in another gun is the way to go with non toxic remmington or gamebore steel by personal choice does all you need at reasonable cost
henry d
With my first wildfowling experience looming, we're planning a three day shooting trip to Scotland where we will be going for pinkfoot and greylags. When and where will you be going? If it is much before the end sept or beginning of oct you may be on a fools errand as there may not have arrived in any numbers. Cosd
When and where will you be going? If it is much before the end sept or beginning of oct you may be on a fools errand as there may not have arrived in any numbers. We're going to Dingwall, and planning our trip towards the end of October and beginning of November. We're shooting on my shooting buddy's cousins land, so we will be given the heads up when they are there in numbers. The timing will be around the birds rather than when we can make it. Going back to my original question, seems my semi is out of the question, I couldn't find any details on the web regards my gun being steel proofed (Benelli 121 SL80) and I can't see the 'fleur de lis' symbol on there either So looks like I'll have to borrow a friends Betinsolli O/U which has 3" chambers and is steel proofed. henry d
Better safe than sorry, the 3" cart will do all you need it to, have a great time
Cosd
After calling BASC to confirm, I can use lead for inland shooting in Scotland ( I wasn't aware), and being we will be decoying I want to take my semi auto. What lead carts can you recommend for greys and pinks in a 70mm cart without me having to spend £15/box? Cos
henry d
Gamebore buffalo 36gm No.3`s or possibly 42gm, but they may rattle your fillings a bit. No idea of price.
Beretta28g
Gamebore Buffalo 36BB theres nothing they dont kill foxes love them. Also if you can still get them (?) (I have a couple of boxes left from when dad bought a load) Winchester Western 3'' Magnums are brilliant.
wildfowler.250
Lyalvale express 42g 3's in lead for decoying.
Gutty Boots
If you are using Dingwall as your base, take both guns & try some fowling on the shore aswell as over decoys. There are some cracking spots around the Cromarty Firth, & Nigg Bay is less than a half hours drive too. At that time of year & with local knowledge on hand I'm sure you'll have a great time. Good luck.

foreshore
Totally agree with wildfowler .250 about the Express super game. Or also 40g Victory mini magnums.

motty
Gamebore Buffalo 36BB theres nothing they dont kill foxes love them. Also if you can still get them (?) (I have a couple of boxes left from when dad bought a load) Winchester Western 3'' Magnums are brilliant. I personally wouldn't use 36gm BB,the lack of pellets means the pattern could be a bit thin. I would go for 1 1/2 oz 3 or 4.
Cosd
I'm not an expert on wildfowling by any means, but BB's does seem excessive when we are decoying. I think I'm leaning towards 3's or 4's around the 36g mark.
Whytie2697
I use 36g 3s for the geese inland as long as you let them get close and nit trying to kill them at 40 + yards it is ok
