welsh1
This monster was in my Mum and Dads kitchen this afternoon,it was at least twice as long but when they approached it drew its body into itself,in the picture it is about 2 inches long, and was quite aggressive to anything near it. -Mongrel-
It's a caterpillar, which would become an Elephant Hawk Moth, it was probably on the search for somewhere protected to pupate. Quite common.

Quite common. Spot on. My dad said he gets lots of the moths feeding on the flowers in the garden and yard, but he could not remember ever seeing the caterpillar. robbiep
One of our cats was up close and personal with one of these the other day, and not relly sure what to make of it. Then one of the chickens wandered over. That soon got finished off

sako751sg
Going by your description I would have guessed Cocker3s knob, but at 2 inches it's way too long.

stoggieman
It is as allready stated an elephant hawk moth catepilar it will be looking for somewhere to ibernate if you still have it give it some rosebay willow herb in a large jam jar it will start its metermorphamy within days then next spring you will be able to relise the moth that it changes into. I always think how small the moth is compared to the catipilar. Peter

Peter he was released into a part of my Mums garden that she keeps wild lots of rocks and crevices for it to hide in and lots of nettles some willow herb and if it wants to travel a bit she has a few fuchsia shrubs, but if she catches it eating them i don't give it much hope.
