Went to see a farmer on one of the farms I shoot on last night he told me he had just seen a fox with a short tail crossing the yard, I told him I had four on his land 2 days ago and seen one more but not get a safe shoot so I will be down for a walk tonight, Got there at about 10 o`clock only quarter a mile for my house did not expect to see much as it was clear moon light night walk up into the field lamp on, saw a pair of eyes disappear into the hedge stared to squeak my mouse squeaker and a pair of eyes about 150 yards away started to come running in I am now in a perfect spot as I am in the shadows of a hedge with the rifle resting on a big bail of hay got about 70 yards and stooped as took the shot I noticed anther pair of eyes running in first one down reloaded second one down about 80 yards. Quick shine round another pair of eyes quick squeak in he come about 100 yards bye bye number three, Thats seven in 3 days on the same farm 5 in the same field went for walk up on to mountain and then battery went flat but can`t complain a good night out.Using home load 55grn ballistic tip 22.250 and a red lamp.

Look like this year's cubs from the pictures so they are probably all from the same litter or two that have 'amalgamated'.

They tend to stay in the 'home' area untill about Oct/Nov around here so they were probably birthed close by.

Adults will be somewhere close by.

Well done.

Good shooting, but back ended 2 of em? chest/head shot are best!

Head shots are the last ones I go for with a cf, you can't really tell where the entry was I've had face on ones where it's blown the guts out on exit. The reason I avoid head shots came home well last night had just shot one with another coming in behind and that moved at the last moment, result shot a foot further back, dropped on the spot still but had I been going for the head it would have been a clear miss. Interestingly that was an adult dog and vixen and came to a fox call so possibly pairing up already

One was shot was to far back pulled the rifle, the other one is the exit hole, I always go for the head or chest if I can.

it happens, the one I mentioned above the lamp man was very relieved it dropped as he saw it move at the instant I shot. This time of year you can't hang about they don't stand still for long in the lamp. Keep on with the chest shots leave the head shots for occasions when you absolutely have to as they give no leeway for error. Pull a shot on one and you have a fox with no jaw, I've seen one of them this year that I sorted out they run and you don't find them. Gut shoot one with a .243 and yes it may go a few yards but you will always find it.
