Topgunners
Hi All. Well to say I was gobsmacked is a slight understatement to say the least. Friday mid-day I gets a phone call from one of my farmers saying he was out ploughing the bean stubbles and there were a couple of hundred pigeons.dropping in behind him and in front of him. half on the stubble and half on the mud. I told him we would be out first thing Saturday morning and would see him then. About 2.00pm I gets a text " yo. Over a thousand pigeons on here now". I knew this farmer was sound in mind, judgement and EYESIGHT. LOL so I rang him straight away. He told me he wasn't exaggerating and could I pop over that day. I drove over within the hour and when I got there I passed a wheat field without about 300 on it and on the beans about 500. After a quick chat he then said he would pull off the rest of the field and continue ploughing on Sunday. So we could have a day shooting on Saturday. I was amazed. In all our years of shooting I have never heard any farmer do that. Especially this year with all the farms so far behind due to the bad weather. I thanked him and assured him we would be there first thing. I shot 10 pigeons for decoys and left. Saturday. We arrived just after first light and by the time we set up the "Full Monty" they were dropping in from everywhere. The wind was blowing a gale and we had some spectacular shooting at birds that were flying past at 100 m.p.h. Some very high birds were shot by all. THEN - We had an interruption from a geezer behind us. We were shooting away when all of a sudden a dead pigeon came flying over the hedge and hit the hide. Bloody dangerous or what? Then some geezer comes through a hole in the hedge and walks up to us telling us to move down the field to a spot under a tree where he would shoot from by choice. . I said sorry but the birds were not hitting that area and the wind was all wrong and more important; we would have been shooting towards a public footpath. He then said pigeons were landing in his grass field behind; some mumbling about his dogs and we would have to move.I remonstrated with him that we could shoot the pigeons but couldn't tell them where to land. Especially in the high winds. I again refused and said we were totally in the right and then rang the farmer. He told me to ignore him and carry on shooting" ASK HIM TO VACATE HIS LAND" as he was a miserable sod who used to shoot for him until he kicked him off. The penny then dropped- GREEN-EYED-MONSTER. I told him what the farmer had said in my diplomatic way and offered to pick up all the dead pigeons when we were finished. He then left. We shot till 5.30 and as we were picking up the farmer came straight onto the field and drove up to us . He had actually been sat there watching and waiting for us to finish.. TOP,TOP FARMER. Wish they were all like that. We ended up with 156 pigeons and a jackdaw. Sunday First light we are out again. We didn't have a clue really where to go so we split up and went drive-abouts. We found some 100+ birds on some wheat stubble and set up. Unfortunately after 11 birds they just disappeared. We picked up and moved on. After recceing numerous farms I spotted about 200 flitting about on some more wheat stubble. I rang my mate and he joined me soon after. We set up in front of a tree and the wind was blowing a hooley. We had them flying in and over us. God that wind was cold. I then stripped the hide down and put the brolly up behind us. What a transformation that was. At least we were warm and more comfortable. The pigeons came in steady but slow and we finished on 81 pigeons. part bag Total 248 x Pigeons 1 x Jackdaw 2 x Ducks. Mixed weekend and the weather, I am sure ; is a sign of things to come. Dave K Edited September 30, 2012 by Topgunners

Cranfield
Good read as usual. I have found if you are good to farmers, they are good to you. Its amazing how stubble brings out the "green eyed monsters", I think its the only time of year they shoot.

Frenchieboy
Sounds and looks like you had a really good time and did the farmer a favour too! I can only echo what others have said - Take care of the farmer and he will take care of you! It only seems like a few weeks ago that everyone was posting things like "Where are all the pigeons" or "No birds showing on my permissions yet"! Like they say, good things are worth waiting for! Top write up and photos mate! :good:

hawkeye
I am also lucky to have a farmer like that he always rings me when ever the pigeons start hitting his crop or stubble, if my mobile rings around 7-30 i know 99% of the time who it is and soon as i say hello, He says its Chris, with my reply off i it is know no ****** else phones me before the streets are aired. He just laughs and says there are hundreds of birds on such and such field have a go first chance you get.. them im on the phone to mag357.......kdubya ......and scaffy to see who is available.. He is so considerate when he starts to work the fields he always asks us if there is any particular one we would like him to leave till last...so we can get a bit more shooting in ...this year its the bean field stubble he is leaveing till last... :good: Edited October 1, 2012 by hawkeye
