My view is very simple......I will do whatever I need to to protect my nearest and my property. Trained when I was younger in Kendo Karate and Iaido. Too old now but still have the two swords. So anyone coming into my house with evil intentions better get on the floor very fast. Any argument or show of a weapon and he is going to be an ex burglar. And stuff it if I go to jail.

we must be careful gentlemen as after a while when enough burglars have been shot the normally unarmed burglar may decide to tool up as he may well conclude he may have to shoot if the householders waving a gun.

I wouldn't trust some of those "tooled up" burglars with a pencil never mind a gun

Interesting reading,

Having worked with the police some years ago, they passed on info about burglars tactics when in a house.

A favourite is knives, also a boiling kettle and in another house burglary the burglar had a pan of chip fat on the cooker for anyone going downstairs in response to a noise. It pays to know what the other guy may get up to, to deter you. The chip fat set on fire after he left.

I dont know how you want to determine 'in fear for your life' but best to be aware a burglar may have defence of his own and respond accordingly - a face full of boiling chip fat could be construed as attempted murder ?

hope i never have to make these kind of choices decent security maybe the answer, maybe the government should do some sort of scheme to improve home security in britains homes to make this kind of crime harder.

Don't have a chip pan in my house so the burglar would have to make do with oven chips. He would be welcome to boil the kettle. Daresay I could do with a brew after I had cut his ears off

 I'm I light sleeper. I think that by the time he had broken in, rummaged through my kitchen cupboards to find a pan and oil and got them boiling, I might be alert enough, and sufficiently equipped to dissuade him from his illicit, nocturnal pomme frites shenanigans.

The law is fine as it is. You can use appropriate force in defence of yourself or someone else. You only need to fear imminent harm. I.e. You can't chase them down the path finding your shotty after them as you are not in immediate danger. Those who don't understand the law call for change (to what it already is). Home defence guns are a bad idea as people will break into homes in search of firearms or go tooled up upping the ante.

Our law is appropriate to our society but unworkable in USA for example. Its a one way street which I hope we dint go down.

I sort of agree but struggle with the current situation where when a householder does defend themselves from an intruder the default setting is they are are initially treated as a suspect not a victim. The couple who shot the burglars recently being a case in point. Yes they were exonerated eventually, but not before they'd had the the humiliation of being banged up for three days? Was that really necessary? Was it possible for the police to establish the facts without doing that? If the proposed law changes make that scenario less likely, then that's a good thing.

People already break into homes in search of firearms tooled up. I don't see that some might get tooled up because the house owner might be armed as a good reason not be armed.

Most burglars are just skanky druggies looking to pay for the next fix. It's about time they got the message that now if the householder catches them they will get hurt and the law will side with the homeowner. As far as I'm concerned scumbags that burgle peoples homes forfeit their rights on the doorstep.

+1 ..... It seems perverse to me that we should be forced to rely on an unarmed and ill-equiped police force (who are also often very in-efficient ansd slow to respond) to defend your property and family.

no id rather they just ****** of and if i lose the tv so be it. guns must be the very last resort and only for the defence of life. if life is threatened then i suppose like most better to be tried by 12 than carried by 6. i do support the proposed changes
