I have a Nissan Terrano 2 and i think they are seriously under rated. £3000 will buy you a good clean example, 5 doors are more money than 3 doors. Mine returns reasonable mpg and has a 2wd/4wd high/low option, with decent tyres on is pretty capable off road too.

Me to I love my truck, i got a nice x plate LWB with low miles (75000) for under 2k, I have found it very capable for everything i need and always does 30mpg. Not sure what its like an offroading course but i have used it a few times now towing a big ifor trailer with minidigger over muddy fields and never had a problem. Also the 2.7 diesel is bomb proof. It is also a lot bigger inside than the discovery.

If I can get a 4x4 that will give me around 30 or above ill be happy

one of the big factors is tyres, my l200 was doing about 32 on road tyres and I usually get 28-30 on grabbers but that is a good mix of shorter journeys and a couple of nights a week out lamping. It will however stay the same if fully loaded and we go shooting further afield, its hard to beat when 4 people can go in comfort with as many dogs as you like and as much gear as you want to take. The newer models especially if you get the higher output varieties tend to be even more economical especially at motorway speeds. Then you get sensible road tax as well being as they are commercial

i wish we didnt need 4 weel drive here, its getting to be a drag and a drain forking out for fuel. A realy cheap to feed van would be great at times yet for a good part of the year i wouldnt get up the darn track or recover the fools who try in unsuited motors. 15 yrs back i thought nothing of heading 150-200 miles for some fishing or shooting for just the single day, now i think twice before heading into town. Hardly suprising the economy aint buzzing....................

my personal and ex- proffesional experiance in the past says you dont get a lot of good used 4x4 's for less than 3k that are also good on fuel as per the OP

I've had most 4x4's and the last few have been delica's, great all round car but juicy so I've just parked it at the farm and bought a Honda CRV and have to say it bloody impressive.

Has got me though some real boggy stuff and actually when I measured it it has 1/2 inch more ground clearence to the sill than my mates L200.

Economical (compared to the 2.8d Delica), loads of room for the dogs and all my shooting stuff and has Honda reliabilty.

Another bonus is the big panoramic sunroof in the back for lamping

Well you guys have started me seriously rethinking the 4Runner purchase. the problem here is that most of the hi MPG vehicles {diesel} won't pass the stringent and some say impossible air quality standards. I am still looking at options a 30 mpg 4X4 would surely be a treat.

like here they aint realy fussed about air quality, if they were they would force manufacturers to make longer lasting cars through punitive measures and cut co2 drastically. The government across the world are just after the sales taxes. Its just a cloak to get us to buy expensive new things- maybee also feeding the banking industry with the loans they peddle?

Yeah agree with that I can get 45+ on a run out of my l200 not many 4x4 that can carry what they can can do that mpg top marks from me, tyre size as you said is another thing to watch in all vehicles.......
