born_2_kill
At times quite a few birds (pigeons/pheasants) drop and are still hopping around a little, Im not really into necking as this get my hands dirty so to speak, whacking with a large stick is out of the question and giving them another round up closer means its full of lead and not a joy to eat. I'm considering an air pistol such as a Beretta 92FS for an up close to the head finish, worth it? Edited November 8, 2012 by born_2_kill
.philmypower.
Just break their necks, if your going to shoot them and there not dead you should put them out of their misery as soon as. Dont think an air pistol is essential plus will cost a few quid
kyska
No, it's a stupid idea, IMO with no offence intended, if you can't quickly and humanely dispatch a wounded animal, stop shooting them. On a lighter note you can get humane killers for birds (not in the pistol form, bit like pliers). You can still say 'you feeling lucky punk?' when you use them too. .philmypower.
Kyska is talking about dispatchers. I use to have them but found them worse than necking them, seemed to take a while

kyska
Kyska is talking about dispatchers. I use to have them but found them worse than necking them, seemed to take a while I am. The op will still have to catch the bird to shoot it, so op, I suggest a priest, sharp crack on the wounded birds turnip and off you go fella. No offence taken, and I didn’t say I didn’t dispatch of them instantly as I do with a second round, what I did say is it isn’t ideal
kyska
It's not ideal fella, but if you get your technique right you'll send your bird off pretty quickly with minimum mess....applicable in several scenarios Edited November 8, 2012 by kyska
MM
I use Voodoo. I chant around them, spitting rum and blood. then, just when they go into a trance, i chuck some chicken bones at them. I dont really, i use a form of priest. I have a heavy handled knife in a leather cover, and hold the blade, then whack with the handle.

Salop Matt
just get a preist and use that, clean and quick ! But kyska is right, if you cant dispatch by hand stop shooting as it isnt fair on your quarry !
Catweazle
Hold the head and use a circular motion to twist the neck until it snaps. You can do it with one hand whilst the other holds dead birds.
karpman
Kyska is talking about dispatchers. I use to have them but found them worse than necking them, seemed to take a while Sounds like your using the wrong size or in the wrong place mate. If they wind there neck in use the two prong on the end one each side of The napper. Have suggested on other threads if ya don't like doing itch with you hands humane pliers is the way to go

FalconFN
I carry a priest - just a stainless steel bar about 1/2" wide and 7" long, a sharp tap on the back of the head is all you need. i don't like wringing necks as their heads come off far too easily and you can spread feathers about. southeastpete
OMG all these people who say if you cant break a neck dont shoot do my head in. Never let an animal suffer, and if it comes to it and you have no other option, shoot it again and lose the meat. I once bought an air pistol for ferreting when the rabbits get really caught in the nets and hard to get out, i thought a quick air pellet to the head and it will come out of the net easier. I tried it once, from about two inches i shot it, the pellet richoched off the rabbits skull. I felt awful and demanded a refund for the air pistol (i had explained axactly what i wanted the air pistol for) Priesting is the best method i think. I used to be able to neck birds, but for a long time now, I feel and hear the neck snap, but the bird is left blinking, opening and closing the beak, trying to walk, flap. This isnt just reflexes, the neack is clearly broken but the bird alive. So I am now a firm priest user. Anyone who says if you cant neck dont shoot is pompous. born_2_kill
Firstly as for the 3 people that commented on the username, if you managed to catch a few films in the 80's (by the sounds of it your probably not old enough) and if you include the picture beside my username which also says born2kill and add a little education (if you have any) you will know its a play on words from a film called full metal jacket, it has nothing to do with shooting, shotguns or hunting. Back to the more serious comments and advice, ill be certain to take a look into the devices mentioned and i have dis-regarded the idea of the pistol at this point, thanks for the help! Then you've not done it right! breaking an animals neck per se won't kill it, you need to disrupt the brain stem.
