matone
HMR does what it was designed to do, but people believed the stories about it being a 250yd gun and still complain about it. There are blokes at my rifle club who still think the HMR is a 4000fps round, such is the mis-information about it. I love my HMR because I accept what it can do and what it can't. +1 I find the HMR to be the most used working rifle I`ve owned ! Just a very capable round imho . Totally eclipses .22lr and yes I do have bigger calibers for bigger jobs !
al4x
Sounds like they are doing a great job getting the FPS obsessed brigade moist, and it isn't even out there yet pretty much, I guess they are hoping for something that shoots as flat as the HMR with less windage and more clout, there isn't really a use for it in the UK IMHO as the HMR is already a bit strong for rabbits and the next quarry size up is foxes and if you are going to make the noise you might as well hit them with something big. I've had 9 in the last week and a bit and most could have been shot with the HMR 3 of them were a bit rangey but the rest would have been fine, but nothing beats the assertiveness the .243 puts them down with especially at sub 50 yards

kent
The 5mm Remington re-vamped sounds good but a shall not be getting one nor another .17 hmr. The .22 hornet c/f beats them both on harvestable rabbits, foxes (humanely) and corvids. If any magnum rimfire ammo was dirt cheap to purchase like .22 subs then that's a whole new perspective
Brown Sauce
I wonder how they've managed to heat treat the neck, so that it doesn't split under the increased pressure. Happens on my hmr once in every 10 to 20 rounds at 2345fps, so at 4000fps I'll be standing well back and using a suitable length of string to pull the trigger!!! al4x
If you drop everything on that list that isn't rimfire then you don't have many left
Dunkield
Maybe there are some new animals that have been invented that can't be killed with any of those
Bazooka Joe
If any magnum rimfire ammo was dirt cheap to purchase like .22 subs then that's a whole new perspective In one, it might make or brake it. Speed sells, same as the HMR when it came out, Hornadays 17 not even off the ground yet, so it'll be interesting to see what Winchesters got up it's sleeve, just hope it'll live up to the hype. al4x
Maybe there are some new animals that have been invented that can't be killed with any of those ah but the reason we are no longer living like apes is down to evolution man cannot just be happy with whats available he does have to keep looking for improvements! Bewsher500
pretty much, I guess they are hoping for something that shoots as flat as the HMR with less windage and more clout, there isn't really a use for it in the UK IMHO as the HMR is already a bit strong for rabbits and the next quarry size up is foxes and if you are going to make the noise you might as well hit them with something big. So true. we have a much narrowing "varmint" category of quarry here compared to the US and IMO the HMR is more than required for bunnies unless you constantly shoot them at the limit of the calibre's range just too messy and noisy
njc110381
I've always been keen to see new calibres but would be wary of new rimfires. At least with a centrefire you can make your own ammo if the supply gets cut - with a rimfire you're screwed. I guess if they can throw out nearer Hornet energy from a rimfire then that's no bad thing. In fact it could be very good. If they made it .22 flavour it could be semi auto too... rimmie
It does sound a good round, a sort of .17 hmr with a bit more clout ! But as njc says if it flops and you have a rifle you'll eventually have to get ammo imported from the states witch will be very pricey !! I am looking forward to seeing what happens next year Edited December 19, 2012 by rimmie
colin lad
You have a lovely turn of phrase, I bet at sub 50yds it asserted the carp out of them i see al4x drop a fox with his 243 at 30 yards and you could of fit a tennis ball in the exit wound colin
Dekers
Ha Ha, isn't speculation a wonderful thing............. :good: I heard it was going to be .5inch and do 4500ft sec, be perfect for bunnies, destroy every centrefire and only cost 10p a cartridge, but I bet it won't catch on ...... Merry Christmas, it was a hell of a party yesterday! Dunkield
I understand there is slight delay as Winchester are having a few problems re-writing the laws of physics. But NJC is filling out a variation already...
