Boxing day walk about

Went out for a walk on Boxing morning to try and get rid of some of the food and drink that was consumed on Xmas day. Was quite confident of getting a few woodcock as the ground I was covering always produces a good number of birds at this time of the year. By the time I had shot my first bird I had flushed approx half a dozen birds, but unfortunately for me, they kept flying the wrong side of the ditches withhout getting a shot. The first bird I shot did provide a nice challenging shot in heavy cover and Dawn made a great retrieve. I then went on to flush another few birds without a shot.

I then came towards the bottom a heavy dyke when suddenly there was a tremendous noise a birds flushing. 2 birds flushed out of the one bush, 1st one I took crossing me and the 2nd a longish shot going off me. :yahoo: my first right & left of this season. As I was by myself I obviously didn't have any witnesses, however, I am already a member of the woodcock club. This was my 3rd ever right & left :D . Below is a pic of the 2 birds just after they were retrieved:

This seemed to change my luck and I went on to shoot 4 more woodcock. so all in all I shot 7 woodcock for 8 shots, with only 1 bird missed. Myself and Dawn had a lovely walk and we were both ready for our bed by the time we got home. Pic of the final bag:

I have missed my share of right and left chances over the years, many times like yourself shooting the first and rushing the 2nd shot.

Yeh only for some of the thick cover I could have been into double figures.

Top wee walk Ollie and some superb shooting.Something special aboot the woodcock and great to see a few aboot.Hardly seen any at all this season but they have their favourite spots and seem to stick with them.

I must have flushed 20 plus birds on Boxing Day, great show of birds. Probably to do with the full moon at the moment. Certainly special Woodcock, they are such a magical and wild quarry.

Well done ollie. Another l+r to your tally. 1 more and were even :P . Great numbers of birds in Co Antrim this year. Double figures are a reality every outing. The 100 birds should be easy enough got this year.

Cheers mate, first chance I have had at a L&R this year. This is the first outing this year that I have saw really good numbers, think it was partly due to the full moon.
