Tod
Went over to have a day with Swisstony on some rape that was supposed to be getting hammered today, thought with the big thaw the birds would be eager to get a good feed in them but they just would not commit, tried everything from flapper, magnet and just decoys to no avail , decided to bin at after an hour and a half with one pigeon and one crow, went for a drive about and there were thousands in the area but they were just moving on to another field when we put them up, we soon realised we were wasting our time as they had too much choice now the snow had gone, ended up finding a good flightline and getting under it for an hour, had some great sport with some very testing shots with the 20mph wind behind them, still an enjoyable day but just goes to show pigeon shooting in the winter really is hard going. mrikirkby
me and my dad went today on fresh beet tops beside a wood and they would not decoy at all but there were plenty flighting in to the wood around the corner so headed round there and both shot about 20 carts for 2 birds, very testing as it was blowing a gale !!! TIGHTCHOKE
Never regard a day chasing pigeons as FRUITLESS, I agree you've only shot a few but you've kept them moving and that's what the farmer wants. Better days will come and you've proved your usefulness to the guy who allows you to shoot on his land!

williamr
I went yesterday,we cheked 4 areas which had rape all were devoid of pigeon,we settled down on a field which had about 50 birds feeding then moving of to a wood to come back after a short period, they would not decoy, they were very scittish,1 shot all day,so much for the birds wanting to feed up,they were veyt warey. Better days will come and you've proved your usefulness to the guy who allows you to shoot on his land! I disagree. Chasing pigeons around IS fruitless and achieves very little. Scaring pigeons from field to field only makes them more wary and therefore harder to decoy. Better to leave them alone and let them settle a bit and actually shoot some, which is what most farmers want. I go out to shoot pigeons, not to be a mobile bird scarer. 12boreblue
On my little 40 acre permision surrounded by trees all I am able to do is roost shoot, problem is that after the first shot, that's it! The birds just go somewhere else went out Saturday got a shot off and missed, that was the last pigeon I saw, stayed till it got dark and froze my you no whats off! But looks good for the landowner. Going to leave it for a couple of weeks and try again.
