What is the cheapest little run about car you can think of? Thinking about buying a new 4x4 but would prefer to buy a little cheap car for the day to day commute but for it to be cost effective it would need to be cheap like a budgie!

I was thinking Along the lines of Daewoo matiz, daihatsu chore etc?

Regards,

Gixer

Cheap is one thing but don't discount second hand we bought my Missus's mum a 207 gt diesel and that for 6k has been a cracker cheap tax insurance and fuel and is actually fun to drive. I've been out of the office in a van for the last few weeks in a van with the same engine and in and out of London all day that's doing 50mpg no issues in the 50k it's done this year and that's a hard 50k

The other option new is one of the hyundai's cheap and long warranty for new cars but not a great drive

Astra mk3 1.4 8v

Fiesta 1.3 with the auld pushrod engine

perhaps even a Skoda Felicia 1.3

All cheap to buy/run and insure!

I have a 1995 Vauxhall Cavalier 1.8 and fully comp is under £300 I get around 50mpg on a long run if I drive frugally. Mind it's only got 40.000 on the clock.

The room in the car is unbelievable. Drop the back seats and I can get a wardrobe in there. I recently brought home a double door steel cabinet in there. 6 foot tall and around 4 foor wide. All my shooting gear fits in the boot without dropping the seats nets, poles, seat, guns, decoys etc etc.

Ive ran a lot of cheap cars over the years. Depends how cheap you want and its very often a fine line between cost & cost of keeping on the road.

One of cheapest I had was a Peugeot 106 1.5 Diesel. Cost me £800, had it for 3 years and did 80,000 miles over that time in it. Did 55mpg every week. Had new wishbones fitted (£40), new brakes (£50). Back wheel bearings went and it was cheaper for me to get entire back end off a saxo and fit (£50). Ended up selling the car for £900 in the end, so actually made money on it.

More recently one of the better run arounds ive had was a Peugeot 307 2.0 HDI. Over 2 years, did about 50k miles in it. Returned 54mpg every week. Fitted new brakes (£50), new top mounts (£10), new tie rods (£10) and thats it. Cheapest car ive had to maintain. Lost about £500 in depreciation over the 2 years, so thats nothing.
