rarms
>But not for shooting them on the water, not exactly sporting that I really don't see the problem with shooting them sitting. Each to their own I say! No different to stalking a rabbit or a deer. No less un sporting, the ducks could still have seen him and flown off..... SPARKIE
well **** me i didnt realise it was unsporting to stalk 2 ducks that were swimming away from me.whats the difference between stalkin a rabbit and a duck.none :( at the end of the day there goin on my plate.what about decoying pigeons some people let them land before takin the shot whats the diference. rarms
>because it aint very sporting! Define sporting! Where does providing food end and sport begin? Who are we to judge the reason he was shooting them?

wickedandlazee
exactly sparkie not like it was a driven day or owt - you were shooting for the pot which is entirely different in my opinion, just like stalking a rabbit etc etc. p.s they'll both be ready in my freezer tonight good eating mate :(
henry d
whats the difference between stalkin a rabbit and a duck............what about decoying pigeons some people let them land before takin the shot whats the diference. 1 - One is vermin, the other a sporting bird par excellence and you only net duck for ringing purposes now. 2 - Pigeon are on the "license" and are to be shot NOT for sporting purposes but to protect crops. You`ll get almost 10x the price for one as you would the other at the game dealers(if your lucky).
Guest jonrms
Henry you make a good point as far as the "sporting side" however you know my views.... Both can be thought of differantly in any contex. and this is not to go back to a debate.. but to shoot a duck in the air with a SG... is so easy... again to shoot on the ground is the same. I personally think it would be more sporting to restrict the amount of shot that comes out of these SG's to 2 or 3... that would be sporting.... but thats just my honest view.... Everyone has there own but I dont feel that shaking our heads at people and saying how unsporting it is, is constructive or a good idea.... at the end of the day its legal to hunt ducks like this... I say well done ole chap!!!!!

I say well done ole chap!!!!! I don't think you've shot duck before with a shotgun. Its far from easy when they are flying. Duck are a gamebird shooting them on the floor is very unsporting and doing it would get you sent home off a lot of shoots. There is also the safety aspect shot fired at water can bounce so you have to be very careful not to hit people the other side! The only possible reason to do it is if you've a wounded duck and to stop it diving to escape but thats pretty rare.
rarms
>Duck are a gamebird They are not AFAIK classified as game, but as wildfowl/waterfowl. Hare are game but can be lamped, very unsporting if you believe in sporting ness when shooting for the pot. >shooting them on the floor is very unsporting and doing it would get you sent home off a lot of shoots. I would have thought this is irrelevent considering he was rough shooting on his permission.
al4x
ok call them wildfowl whichever way its not sporting even for the table. Birds with a shotgun should only be shot flying.
MC
Thank goodness for someone with some common sense and decency. The biggest difference between a duck and a rabbit is a duck has wings. even hunting for the pot I will only shoot birds in the air. Rabbits and hares have to be shot on the ground. Suffolk shooter
Just on that bit about shooting duck on the ground and safety, I am pretty sure that it says on most boxes of Steel shoot that they are not to be fired at Water or ground as unlike lead which distorts upon impact, Steel especially ricochets off water and ground leading to the possiblility of injury to person or persons in the immediate area. Also, the only time I have shot at Birds whilst on the ground is at Pigeon with an air rifle at even then they have been in the trees and not on the ground. The whole sporting/non-sporting debate is quite simply put as Birds having wings should be shot in the air, ground dwelling game is shot on the ground. This is sporting by the fact that each type of animal/bird has the best chance of escaping by use of it's normal means of movement. All the same, well done for changing to non-toxic shot, well done for getting them (even if I disagree with how) and hope that they taste nice when you cook them. :(
rarms
On a driven pheasant shoot I can understand the sporting aspect of shooting only the high challenging birds. However, rough shooting for the pot or for vermin control, I don't think it is really applicable. I
