evo
ok since may last year i have shot 108 grey squirrels in the woods at the end of my garden and also in my rear garden, since nearly eradicating them all the amount of different bird species has errupted, from small finches, blue tits thrush,s robins, doves you name it they are frequenting my garden now on a daily basis,it is a pleasure to sit in it and watch them instead of watching the grey squirrels wrecking the place. and on tuesday two of these woodpeckers have now appeared and have visited the trees in my garden on three consecutive days, hope you like the vid but it has made my day to capture it through my homemade rifle camera set up through my scope,,,enjoy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DvmAz2vuEM0&feature=player_detailpage
Reece
Good to see. I've seen them in a local wood. Got a glimpse of one the other day, and I got very close to it before it flew to a different tree. Other times I've heard them drumming but not seen them. I've had glimpses of green woodpeckers from time to time as well, but very rarely.

Whitebridges
Nice. Only the the day at my brother-in-laws I saw all three British woodpecker species on feeders at the bottom of his garden. I hadn't seen a Lesser Spotted in a while. Fisheruk
Well done mate. Keep up the pressure on the greys. Let's hope it won't be too long before you see red squirrels returning.

The only birds seen in the wood were pigeon and crows/rooks. A couple of months after we started trapping there was bird song during the day. When we took up the traps we had accounted for over 100 squirrels and the wood was alive with small birds. We have been working on a much bigger wood this year and in 9 months have taken in excess of 250 squirrels with only 5 fenn traps, taking up to 8 a day ie 3 double captures at the start. I stood in the wood roost shooting the other day and all i could hear was birdsong. Looking around the canopy for maybe 150yards in all directions i couldn't see a single squirrel. Anyone that trys to tell you that the cute fwuffy grey squirrels have no impact on bird populations is 100% wrong.
Frenchieboy
Your video and post really emphasises the detrimental effect that grey squirrels can have on wildlife and how controlling the greys can encourage the birds back into an area. I could sit for ages in your garden just watching the wildlife while surrounded by the sounds of the songbirds. Keep up the good work! If so, please add your 2013 kills to this thread: http://forums.pigeon...embers-in-2013/ Well done , I like to see the Woodpeckers but know they are partial to nestlings too . Yes, but you don't tend to get them in anywhere near the same numbers as crows and magpies. Edited February 22, 2013 by Reece
