well i did grow about 100 virginia gold plants about 15 years ago , and boy did them suckers grow , about 7ft tall , and i harvested a huge crop of tobacco leaves that filled a 12x8 shed at the time

but i didnt know how to cure and ferment the leaves back then , i burnt the leaves about 7 years ago , if only i had the internet back then  then they would have been perfect now from what i,ve read LOL

i,ve bought some pelleted seed from tobaccoseed company , three different varities so i.ll give it a go i thinks

alright paul

did you buy the pelleted seeds or the ordinary seed , the ordinary seeds are a pain to sow being so small, thats why i got the pelleted seed , a lot easier to sow in single pots .

i got the turkish basma , virginia gold , tennessee burley strains , planted my seed on valentines day , and they are just poking through now 100% germination rate so far

Looks like you have to own up and pay duty!

duty is only payable when the leaf is cured , fermented , and shredded then its a tobacco product then its liable for duty , as long as the dried leaf is not processed ( i.e shredded or rolled into a cigar i guess ) then its classed as an agricultral product and is NOT liable for duty , well thats the way i,ve read the law anyhow , but i,m no lawyer so dont quote me on it .

if your growing to make your own tobacco to smoke , then you really need to buy the other two varities ( tennessee burley , turkish basma ) as well so you can blend the three tobaccos together

from what i,ve read about home grown tobacco , ( and belive me i,ve read a lot on the subject over the dark winter months ) that by all accounts the virginia tobacco on its own is very mild and thats the reason the other two tobaccos are used in the blending , a typical blend is as follows that is susposed to give a good starting point for pipe or cigarrette tobacco .

virginia 70 %

burley 20 %

turkish 10 %

so for the cost of the seeds , a bag of compost and some pots , its got to be worth a try dont you agree , bearing in mind that a 50 gram pouch is about 16 quid in the shops , and each plant produces anything from 4 to 6 ozs of dried tobacco per plant then 150 well grown plants would keep the average smoker going for 12 months , worth thinking about ..

Thanks for the info,

I was actually wandering about that last night when i read my baccy pouch and it said the finest blend on it,

So i will go ahead and get the other seeds, however i do prefer a milder smoke so my have a shot at the virginia on its own when it comes to harvesting it all,

Our old vicar used to make an alternative pipe tobacco, out of dried clover flowers and the like. He used to visit our primary school once a week for a preaching session, and would leave a trail of unique aroma. That was 40 years ago mind.

Does anyone know of others making their own home brew? No I'm not talking of the Whacky stuff.
