I have had 4 since 2001 , 3 FL 1's and just got a 2010 FL2 ( 150 bhp ) after a couple of yrs with a Kuga , all have been Diesel and never had a prob apart from a new clutch in the 2001 TD4 ( under warranty ) .

Coped very well with the bad winters here 09/10 .

Depends what your after , if your most demanding trip is a slippery field they will manage ok but the bodies are riveted and have a reputation for getting a tad loose if you ask too much of them, I looked at a few the other year and the build quality was pretty poor and very plasticky in comparison to jap 4x4's they looked cheap and nasty but it depends on what you want from a car and what your budget is , shoguns are miles better all round but I only manage 20mpg around town in mine which I'm sure is rubbish compared to a freelander

My mrs had a facelift FL1 it was the TD4 HSE. We got it secondhand and had a lot of issues when we bought it but luckily sorted out by the garage under warranty and after that it was fine. I found it a good towing car and it did well pulling our caravan on and off a rather muddy field on a few occasions. MPG wise we got 30-35mpg. On the road I liked it but at the same time I did have a terrano so any thing with softer suspension seemed an improvement.

The main problem i found is the boot is small but there was plenty of space for 4 adults in the cabin. Do not waste your time looking at anything other than the TD4 engine.

What are you planning on using it for and whats your budget? We spent 6.5K on ours and looking back i would much rather of spent that on a TD5 discovery or a bigger Jap motor like a shogun but at the time its what my mrs wanted.

Run mine all trough the snow in the past week no problems apart from the other 2wd drovers, who paniced and bought all the bread and milk. Mine is a 04 plate 1.8 petrol 3door done 30k in it over two years does about 26-30 mpg. Problems so far 3xprop bearings,1 wheel bearing, the 3 amegio lights on twice faulty brake switch x2,no clutch due to oil seal swelling onto clutch shaft lubed up no ok,track rod end x1,new back box, front exhaust removed itself from flange now welded up,srs light twice reset once now back on due to moving passenger seat, rattles and squeaks all the time, had a pond in the boot best mod drill a hole in the bottom. Basically if you cant fix cars I wouldnt get one. Mine had an uprated head gasket and bolt kit fitted before I bought it. If you want to buy it you can have it for £2200 no offers but sold as seen.

Got four of em.. that's right four FL1's. Since I'm the 'resident mechanic' with nothing better to do at weekends, I have the pleasure of maintaining three 1.8's and a V6 for the family. They're all pretty reliable as long as you keep an eye on Coolant and Oil levels and act accordingly if an issue should crop up. Parts availability is always good with a wealth of secondhand stuff on the 'bay'. The best bit is the bodywork with virtually no rust which has always been a car killer for me. I also agree with Albert 888 - you really need to be willing to get busy with the spanners to enjoy Freelander 1 ownership. .

And as for the V6 Freelander - sounds like a Maserati when taking off... thanks goodness it isn't as fast as one..!!

Good luck - Salmo9

I have face lift commercial model. Great for chucking the dog in the back and good for shooting out the back. (Have to take the roof off first) The vcu's can be problematic and can cause various other drive train issues. Had to take mine off as it was shot and still yet to replace it. It drives just as well in two wheel drive. But otherwise I have no complaints.
