Pigeons mainly still on the rape

Well I've just got home to Bury, after being a passenger in a car from Saffron Walden. So I had the great opportunity to look out of the window all the way home. I've seen thousands of woodpigeon from South to North. The majority that I saw were still bombarding rape fields all over the country. It was quite amazing how many I saw to be honest.

I did see flocks feeding on other stuff, but most were,as I said ,hitting the rape fields still.

I've got to say it did make my boring journey a lot more interesting.

I also saw a couple of muntjac near to Saffron Walden and several roe, off the A14.

(The driver of the car wasn't in the slightest bit interested in the wildlife, so I couldn't even talk to him about it. :/ )

Went out today with high hopes after tearing round like a mad thing at work was done by 10.30am got to the field by 10.45 nothing there watched for about hour and half saw about a dozen. Tthe last couple of days there has been 500 / 600 plus here. Had a look over another 3 farms that have rape where there has also been a good amount of pigeons defiantly enough worth setting up for but nothing. They cant be on fresh drillings because of the recent weather. Got home at 3pm so i decided to earn some brownie points with the Mrs and suggested i would go and get her horse in for her got there and there was about 150 to 200 of the bloody things happily feeding on the clover in the paddocks with the horses.

No chance mate, there's a livery yard the other side of the lane from where my Mrs keeps her horse that has about 20 horses out all day, don't think i will be able to persuade all them to keep their nags in all day. Will just have to wait till Sunday and hope there's some on the rape again.

Every morning while sorting out wife's burger meat, sorry horse!!! I see a constant flight line out of the city roosts, I would love to shoot this but the land owner will not allow shooting . The line then crosses Syndicated shooting ground for miles.

It must be really frustrating that, but don't you find that it keeps you keen and makes you look forward to your next outing, when you see plenty of pigeon movement, even though it's not where you can shoot.

Early morning and late afternoon feed on the rape, but the rest of the day on drillings and clover.

We are well into the lambing season , so that puts most of the clover out of bounds, plus the farmers prefer them on the clover than the rape.

A lot of the fields that were winter sown have failed and are being resown, that is giving the birds more drilled fields to choose from than usual, so they are splitting up.

Wheat, beans and rape going in now, peas in a few weeks time.

I travelled yesterday, from 12.00 noon until 4.00pm. Over 200 miles. I literally did see thousands of woodpigeon, and like I said, generally most, and I mean probably over 90% were definately still feeding on rape fields, during those hours.

Obviously not all, and people are going to see maybe different habits in their localised area, but I probably did one of the biggest country recce's, in that journey. It was an eye opener.

Went to get the wife's horse in again today about 3.30 and same as yesterday easily 150 / 200 on the paddocks where her horse is but unlike yesterday when there was none on the paddocks at the livery yard across the lane today there was nearly the same amount of pigeons on these. They defiantly seem to be liking the clover around here at the moment. Just a shame got no chance of having a go at them.

approx 400 on the rape on our syndicate land today when i went for a look so should be a day or 2 to come on there yet

but we shot 50 on drilling today since the snow has cleared and i reckon a few more bags to be had on drillings for everyone with the setback the farmers have had this month
