Olliesims
Just getting into reloading, and looking at what powder to use, seen alot of people use hodgdon varget, what other powders would people recommend if varget isn't available, will be used for .243, 70-90g bullet weight? Also I'm finding it hard to find load data for sierra blitzking heads as ill be using either these or hornady v max, is it available anywhere over the Internet? al4x
Is there any news when the varget shortage might right itself?
pestcontrol1
Is there any news when the varget shortage might right itself? I was told 12 months the other day there is still back orders to come from last year at the moment Chances of finding Varget or H4350 are VERY slim, if i were starting on a new recipe id look to Vihtavouri (n140 is a good start) or long term Ramshot powders may suffer less problematic stock levels. 1kg of N140 will last you a fair while and im predicting a lot more trading of part bottles to surface with lots of powders before long. Fister have you used re-17 under a 90-95gn in .243 ??
pestcontrol1
No and i wont either. Olliesims
I rang norman clarke and he said no chance of varget but has vit n140 so going to being trying that one, I've worked up what I plan to use, federal primer norma brass 70gr sierra blitz king and try working up the powder to a accurate amount, I made the mistake of going on to an American reloading website and seeing all this has to be so far from the rifling land and its confused me something stupid... So would the c.o.a.l of 2.670 be a safe over all length for not to much pressure to be caused? will be used in a tikka .243 sorry if its a stupid question
coyotemaster
Have a look at IMR 4064, more available reliable and the burn rate is just a tiny bit slower than Varget, offers very good accuracy in large capacity cases. I could see the Varget shortage hitting there eventually---can't find it here for love nor money. I shoot 4064 in the Swift and could shoot the Varget I have but prefer it in the .260/ .223 w/ heavies.
steve_b_wales
I've used H380 for a few years for my .243 & .22-250.
Livefast123
There is a load in the Lee modern reloading albeit for FMJ, 243 Winchester 70 gr jacketed bullet Vit N140 / min 41gr (3196) - never exceed 44.5gr (3505) Min OAL - 2.638 Don't worry about getting your reloads close to the lands for now, what you want to produce is a safe round. I read loads and loads of books and bought a reloading manual before even thinking about starting. There are loads of good video's on Youtube for you to digest about reloading and the potential pitfalls. MOst loads in 243 produce 50 - 60,000 Psi inches from your face, still makes me a bit nervous! (As I have no control over reloading practices, liability is not accepted for the above load which should be checked out before commencing and reloaded by a competant person!) I just bought the last pot of h4895 that I could find anywhere around here. Edited May 15, 2013 by Livefast123

308win
Personally im using Varget in the .308 and H322 in the .204. Ive recently bought Vit N140 for the .308 nd will probably get N130 for the .204 - The American stuff is becoming a pain in the *** to get. Vit is made in Finland, Simples.
