My pajero has just started to do the same thing, I asked about it on the owners club forum and was informed that it is the regulator/rectifier on the alternator. Cheap fix.

However the same thing happened to my mates transit connect, 55 plate, and he was advised to get rid as it was the engine management system and would cost more than the vehicle was worth!

Is yours a Tdi or a Td5?

Cheers, Neil

Loose connection on battery,or alternator not working properly are two that spring to mind.

this is good advice i say pigeonbasher check the earth strap that runs from the battery box to the chasis[tight and clean connections]. if the rev counter needle bounces it could be the alternater.

funy thing that m8 yes the rev counter needle is bouncing all over the place, but i had a replacement alternater a couple of days ago (second hand)

check the wire connections on the back of the alternater in particular the thin wire with spade connecter make sure the connection is tight and clean. even replace the spade connecter with a new one if theres enough spare wire to play with. failing that try to get your alternater tested. i have a feeling thats were your problem lies.

atb aga man.

Check battery terminals are clean and tight and that the cables look good, earth points under air cleaner on n/s and between battery and expansion tank o/s, right hand chassis leg at the front, follow the cable from the battery earth point and lastly rear of gear box to left chassis leg or starter to engine mount. Remove all clean all contact areas refit and smother in grease. If that don't work try either a switch or an alternator, ps was it all ok before fitting a used alternator?

  • 2 weeks later...

My rev counter stopped working on my disco it was the spade connector at the back of the alternator. The alternator can be working fine with the loose connection,

As for the lights no idea, iffy wiring somewhere. As its a 300tdi just give it a smack, that always sorts any electricial issue mine has, there is not a lot to really go wrong with the electrics in a 300tdi disco.

update, bit the bullet and bought a new alternator today, £126 had it fitted, went out shooting this afternoon, and guess what, same things happening, BUT as a lorry overtook me, i flashed him, and noticed the battery light went straight out and the rev counter needle stopped bouncing, so i drove home with the side lights on, but the light/rev needle came on intermitently, could it be the light switch/stalk????????? atb ray

sorry to hear your still having bother ray, i for one was sure the problem was alternater related. as far as i am aware the rev counter and the battery light get there signal directly from the alternater. ??? god only knows then ray. i have a spare haynes manual knocking about for your truck if that would be of any help your more than welcome to it mate.

I would stop messing about and spending £126 on Alternators and take it to an Auto Electrician.

I had a Trans-am a few years ago and the indicators packed up.

I spent hours and hours with the dash and column in bits it did my head in.

So i phoned an Auto Electrician. He came to me 30 min later all sorted. £30 job done.

I was kicking myself for weeks for messing i should of just got an Auto sparky out at the start.
