955i
Hi all, looking into setting up an alternative to that site. Software is in place and site won't take classifieds. Would anyone be interested in using it or won't bother
Thunderbird
What won't you name it, is it a Macbeth...oops, The Scottish Play, thing?
955i
Not named because its not finalised. Would you be interested or not? Moot question otherwise. Looking to see if there is interest first, not going to spend a fortune if no interest
sitsinhedges
How can it possibly be an alternative to ebay???
955i
How can it possibly be an alternative to ebay??? Because it will concentrate on auctions only. Not sell out to businesses. Essentially ebay as it should be
Vince Green
There have been a few attempts already and none have really got off the ground. The trouble is ebay has massive clout. You can look at some of the other copycats to see that without paypal nobody bothers to buy. preloved.com is quite good but a whole different concept. 955i
By one man in his bedroom? No, two men in their bedrooms, one who used to design all the software for American banks credit cards Waste ot time. You'll never be able to compete with eBay. Yes, should just give up and not think any more of it. Grow a spine!! May not work but just give in and accept is not an option
Mike737
My main grumble with eBay is being beaten at the last second by someone with sniping software. I think it should be more like a real auction, when after a bid, everyone is given another chance to bid (going once, going twice etc.). This could be achieved by extending the auction for a limited period of time after a bid, to obtain more realistic selling prices. In other words, after a last minute bid, say at least two minutes time is added, even if the bid was just one second before the scheduled end of the auction, allowing others to raise their bid if they want to. How would yours work Chris? Oh, and did you get any hedgehogs? ATB, Mike.
-Mongrel-
ebay started as a small site that balloned so an alternative is possible. It would however have to offer something that ebay doesn't.

Mungler
You don't have the gazillion pounds to market and advertise (brand recognition and trust is important when credit cards and the Internet are involved) You don't have the developed legal structure or payment mechanism (flawed it maybe but understood and accepted it is) It's chicken and egg - who would pay to list to sell on a platform with no buyers Who would register as a buyer when there's nothing to sell (and there will be a bazillion listings on eBay) I wasn't going to bother to say anything but asking for feedback and biting when someone adds some 'neg' is not on. Going into something eyes open means just that and not closing off and ignoring very real and obvious hurdles

unapalomablanca
contrary to what others say, i think go for it. I dont know why people want to knock it. Ok, the magnitude of e*** is enormous, but essentially it started like you are proposing. I have tried * bid which isnt bad, but seems to be the same as it was 5 or 6 years ago. Good luck to you mate, i will use it if you get it up and running.

Hamster
Everything starts from nothing, you could kick off by opening it up to various shooting / fishing forum users to flog and buy their wares. Ebay will one day have to face a competitor, I almost never bid on anything there but merely look up what I want to buy (not fancy) and compare with Amazon and the latter is often better / cheaper. Ebay selling charges are pretty criminal for what they do so at least you have an angle of attack !
Mungler
Let's just accept the status quo eh! Not sure I would fancy you as my solicitor!! Oh would you take a breath and listen to yourself. My clients come to me for advice, they pay £250/ hour plus vat, they listen and then they choose what they want to do and instruct me. You're not even paying let alone listening Tell you what you want to hear - it's a cracking idea, I can't believe anyone else hasn't thought of it, so don't waste another minute - mortgage your kidneys and get yourself on Dragons Den and this time next year you'll be a zillionaire.
