Spring rape last Saturday 15th June.

Apologies for a late post. My computer has been frazzled by virus infections and I only got it sorted today.

During the good session last Saturday I could see another flight line of pigeons into the furthest of four spring rape fields in the same ownership. I could not get back to watch this week but I invited a friend to shoot with me last Saturday on the basis that he went every day in the week to see if the numbers were sufficient for another shoot and if they were where the flight lines were. He said that there were 'a few' so we arranged our day's shooting.

We delayed our arrival at the field due to heavy rain and when we got there things did not look promising. There were only a few birds in the air and none of them were on a flight line that had previously been identified. Rain was forecast for the afternoon and it was really a toss up between a couple of hours on a non existant flight line or going to the pub to watch the British Lions. We chose to shoot.

I set up very close to one edge of the field not more than 10m from a field full of cows and my companion set up 40m further down the hedge. We both put out rotaries and a total of six dead birds on stakes and settled into our hides. I shouted across that things did not look at all good with darkening skies and no pigeons in the air but in the first hour of very hectic shooting we shot and picked exactly 50 pigeons! They just turned on like a tap and we had very good shooting for five hours or so and at the end of the flight we picked 203 pigeons.

Although we were ecstatic at our day we did not look forward to the daunting prospect of making at least six trips back to the vehicles with our kit and 213 pigeons (we started with 10 as decoys) when we heard a quad bike in the distance coming towards us. It turned out to be the estate gamekeeper and his grandson who had heard our banging away and brought a trailer to help with the carriage of the birds and our kit.

The picture shows some of the birds in the trailer which had to be packed six deep for the short journey to the chiller room.

Is the light coloured bird a woodie ?must be a good shot to kill ratio , nice one

Yes the light coloured bird is a woodpigeon and I showed more photos of it under a post entitled....'leucistic pigeon'. It also had an extra leg growing out of it's breast.
