fabarm gamma boy
I know just about any load will flatten a fox at close range but im looking for a cartridge capable of dispatching a fox at around 25yds, all the obvios loads are 3" nobody realy stocks hefty loads in 2 3/4! Least not at my locals any way! im thinking 36g of 3s maybe bigger? my usual load in 3" is 50g of no3 (winchester double magnums) but not using a 3" gun now
pegasus bridge
42g of #1 in a 70mm shell, cant remember which brand though!
B B
I use AAA for fox in shotguns, hull cartridge three crowns do a cheap rto AAA load in 70mm case they are slow but pattern good . do lots of choke research (I use .655 terror by SRM) and put lots of time to develop the load for pattern the low pellet count means mothing if you can get it to pattern good. A great many good lead chokes out there i would start by looking at indian creek black diamond assault or the black diamond strike if you want to stick with your smaller shot. TJ91
Have used 42g 3s. Did the job well. Can't remember which manufacturer 30g 6s drop more than most through 12bore I bet
aris
I would have thought the bigger shot, the better. Is this not the case?
Sx3 clay breaker
Semi magnums by fiocchi is what most of the boys on our shoot use on fox drive but 32 g+ should not over a fox at sensible range ie sub 15 yards I use 63 magnums in 0 but would want to shoot much further than 35 yards

Therefore 40g+ 3s 1s or BB would be my first choices

henry d
I would have thought the bigger shot, the better. Is this not the case? No, you lose out on pattern and risk the shot passing through and hitting other things, beaters, other animals, vehicles... 36gm 3`s will do the trick at 25yds, just do your bit. rem708
On my local estate the game keepers carry shotguns on the last few days of the season (beaters and cleanup days). Normally loaded with 6's they will take any disturbed fox at 20-25yds and efficient dispatch is achieved. No idea what choke is used but I guess fairly tight. If you put enough pellets in the quarry it is going down through shock and of course you always have the second barrel Bigger the shot size the less pellets and bigger gaps in the pattern. There is no advantage to large shot if most of it misses! Bigger is not necessary better (Wife told me that years ago and she's always right )

Vince Green
You will find most gunshops won't have any of the above on their shelves because they are too slow moving and its dead money tied up in stock. So the best advice is go into your local shop and see what he's got (if anything) and that's what you will have to use. The tail wags the dog these days. Exactly its the same with wildfowling ammo they stock what they can get easily and move swiftly from stock. This is why its allways best to reload for the more specialist stuff, this way you get exactly the performance you want, anything else is a compromise, and if you are going to perform to the best of your abilities the ammo in the equasion is an important factor, you may get by with what the trade supplies but reload you get it perfect if you do the hard yards to make it work. All depends how serrious you are about your sport at the end of the day.

I tried SG and over 30yds had little actually hit the kill zone on a fox target and the overpenetration is horrendous.
