kennett
His wondering if anyone can offer me advice, the river I fish has some serious size chub in, they are rarely if ever fished for and aren't easily spooked but they seem totally uninterested in what ever I trot past their face, but the dace and odd trout go mad for it. Any tips on time of day, baits or tactics? cheers

Twistedsanity
Spam ! Leger rig Edited July 1, 2013 by Twistedsanity
Kes
Fish take what tends to drop naturally into the water - I have had some success with slugs freelined - worms as mentioned. If they havent been fished for then luncheon meat in 1/2 inch cubes legered. Larger fish will be choosy so I'd start with slugs.
Amazed
Simmilar to carp fishing. Cheese worms casters/maggot bread pellet/hemp luncheon meat spam take a bit of everything. Fished off a feeder. Inline feeders are best for casting but anything will do. Even make your own with a little thought. a good quality ground bait/ pellet / hemp mix or even bread mulch if you short Spend a good 10/15 casting a good bed of bait out and then go for broke and bring in often to keep the bed topped up placement is everything use your line clip if you carnt judge the distance. I always try and fish a safe area like islands or inlets rather than open water. I do miss fishing but it was getting like moving house every time I went
kennett
Cheers for all the advice, I can look down on the fish in about 3 foot of water and literally bounce the bait off their heads, tried maggot and bread but the swarms of face beat them too it so a big chunk of cheese/spam or slug sounds like a plan
neillfrbs
cheese but got to be extra mature .but on a serious note used to catch loads when I was a kid on a ledger rig with with cheese moulded around a size 8 hook .
Penelope
Had loads of big chub to over 7lbs, by far the best baits I have used are bread, either trotted or link legered, maggots trotted using light tackle (3lb main, down to 2lb bottom and size 20 super spades), and a milk protein mix of my own recipe. When using maggots I'll happily feed for an hour or more before running the float through. It might be worth stalking them using a big black slug. Winter is the best time for chub. holly
try chum mixers free lined they may slurp off the top
Nicholas Bottoms
Sounds different but maybe try a small spinner of an early morning or evening, have seen people catch up to 5lb on them before. Otherwise some smelly cheese surrounded by compacted bread, trotted down the margin or near any likely features.

kennett
Funnily enough while fishing on Saturday I foul hooked a minnow under a blanket of weed and tried that lip hooked but with no success, I think partly it nay have been the time of day as it was a hot sunny afternoon. Thanks for all the advice, plenty to try and if I manage to get to grips with one I will stick a pic up!
pimpkiller
beef it up! cage feeder filled with halibut/brown crumb/small pellets then a hooklink tied above with a waterknot then hair rig a 12mm halibut pellet on flat against the hook. caught loads on the dove with this method, proper rod bending takes. SEshooter
I find a small piece of lamprey (think that's how it's spelt) works well for big chub, or as been said minnow. They may not spook if they see you but it can put em off the feed, be stealthy as possible and good luck
Tony G
Not heard any mention of cheese paste. My PB of 7 lb 9 came to home made cheese paste made with frozen pastry, blue cheese and a hint of garlic

TwoJackRussells
Big chub can be VERY difficult to fool, all the suggestions so far may work cheese, meat etc but I think You should try a more natural bait ie are there any elderberry or blackberry bushes overhanging the water ?Big chub love to sit under these and eat the berries as they drop! sounds crazy but give it a go.
