Hi folks, I have been thinking of buying a Land Rover but know zero about them. I know I want the type the farmers or Army use. That probably sounds stupid but only way I can explain it.A friend of mine has one which we use every year when we go shooting in Scotland, and I just think they are great.Really could be doing with some advice as I see a lot on here seem to have them.

Sounds like you don't realy know anything about land rovers... Best advise I can give is to take someone who knows defenders with you when you're going to look at one...

Except for not buying one at all off course... LOL!

As I said I know nothing about them apart from the fact I really like the look and have heard a lot if good reports. I suppose its like anything you'll know nothing to you learn....

I love defenders -have a few of them, but I'm not saying it's a rational love...! To most people all defenders look the same, but I can tell you an old 1986 110 2.5 n/a does drive a lot less nice than a newer 2005 110 td5. So before you start looking, decide what you want from the car first!

Yeap that's good advice, have been talking to a man around the road a bit from me and he has worked and broke LR for as long as I remember him. He said much the same, he said he has had professional types buying the older LR because of ther looks and then coming back and saying there's a draft at the top of the doors or its very noisy. In other words had no clue what they were buying.

On my fifth or sixth - wouldn't be without one.

Defender or 90 will see you right.

PLEASE don't buy 'till you get someone with a lot of knowledge to go right over it.

The're some right heaps of doodoo out there that will cost you a fortune.

Don't even think about the miles to the gallon - Just enjoy.

Grandalf, we share the same tastes in vehicles as well as NV.

Marty, sorry for the typo in my first post.

Things to look for:-

Rear cross member. Test with keys or screwdriver for solidity.

Bulkhead. Check for corrosion especially near the windscreen hinges

Seat box. Make sure all sides are solid.

Front and rear outriggers. Ensure these are solid.

Having an mot means nothing. I looked at one that had a fresh more 3 days old and it had a fist sized hole in the chassis.

Don't forget the doors. Rotten door frames around the bottom are a pain if they are the full one piece doors and not the split series/military ones! Defender doors cost a fortune!

My 90 ex MOD is 1986 and all original bar the hard top.

Depends where they have been and what they have done.

If kept under cover at night and when not in use it makes a hell of a difference.

Think mine was down in Cyprus for some of its time.

Some of my farmer friends are driving around in heaps held together with binder twine at half the age.

I have an 1989 110 defender, one of the first 200tdi ones i believe, and with 190k on the clock it is my go to motor (got a discovery as well). It will go almost anywhere a 4x4 will (the argo is better for the nasty stuff) and is very reliable. Ok, it always has something needing done, but also always gets you home. It has been refurbished a couple of times now, and next week is getting new middle row doors and probably a new rear one. I have no doubt it will need new front doors in the next couple of years.

I paid for it a decade or so ago, and it probably costs £180 a year in insurance, couple of hundred in road tax and £300 a year in repairs or tyres / brakes inc servicing. Carbon footprint wise it will be low, as it has lasted years, costs little and if i decided to drive to africa tomorrow i would throw in a tool kit, some spares (paddocks phone number) and just go.

I am fully expecting it to be going in another decade or so!
