You have to draw a line somewhere though otherwise we'd get nowhere. I think your word 'dependent' nails it. An alcoholic is someone who cannot function normally without the aid of alcohol. IMO of course.

That's the difficult thing though Mongrel, functional alcohol dependents never end up at the Dr because the social impact of alcoholism isn't presented, its normally a routine blood test which requires a full round of tests pick up on either liver function (which surprisingly the majority of alcoholics don't die from liver failure) or indices like 'macrocytosis' arises.

So, the vast majority that drink lots, and the drinking doesn't have a social or holistic impact could arguably be perfectly suitable for a FAC/SGC on face value, the obvious 'harmful drinker' will raise issues for the GP's reference.

I think its so subjective, someone can be drinking themselves to death, but be a perfect citizen, some drink less, sometimes little. and cause chaos and misery for their loved ones, themselves and anyone in the vicinity of them.

It is really, really, obvious when someone is completely dependent, there are a couple of Dr's on here who may concur, but they tend to be at the terminal end of alcoholism, you can make that judgement (or diagnosis if you're a Doc) without speaking to them.

Recently since I've been working abroad 4 or 5 bottles of corona a night, most of the time due to the 35c + temps everyday combined with a 12 hour shifts 7 days a week till it rains. Then when it rains the only place to go within 130kms is the outback pub so inevitably that's where we end up, don't even want to think about how much gets drunk there, although I do know th last big session we drank em out of all there champagne(cheap and nasty) and all the white wine. Never felt soo rough in my life!

Don't think living snd working with 7 Irishman helps with the drinking situation one bit!

I don't really drink at home. Drinking is a social thing for me, I play league snooker (when the season starts in Sept) and have a few on a Thursday but have to limit myself as I drive 35 miles to work at 7am the following day. I have a good session on Saturdays if I go to my local football club, the first half of the match they look a decent team but by the final whistle its like watching Brazil. The landlord suggested that I was averaging 4 pint an hour last Saturday (I had a bad week last week) for quite a few hours !! That explained why my legs didn't work right I guess. I stick to Carling Lager but occasionally have a drop of grouse if I get full of beer.

I will be testing the Sangria and San Miguel in 2 weeks time in Majorca :drinks:

I've had a fairly dry week but after a fantastic Anguilla anguilla session over low water tonight i've bust open a 750ml leffe brun and am now nicely monged. I like the effect that different boozes have. Some are nasty, harsh trysts and some are fluffy blissful affairs. Leffe tonight is the latter. Mmmmmmmmmmmmm..........

  • 3 weeks later...

I went on a right mission last Thursday. Drunk a whole bottle of rum in the evening at a mates birthday. I didn't suffer a hangover for work on Friday - if anything I seem to do better! Up earlier than normal unloading the truck, got loads done and didn't have to drive until later so all well on that front too.

Just bought an optic and it's neatly screwed to the wall, hidden between 2 cupboards in the kitchen.

The aim? To make us more aware of the amount of Smirnoff we drink each evening, and cut down accordingly.

The result? Increased consumption because I feel like a barman with a new toy :/

What do you drink at home if you do and how often do you consume it and how much do you consume?

I have gone from not drinking at home ever, then I hit my late twenties and for some reason started having a couple of glasses of wine most nights, to having a bottle every night and now or certainly the last 3 years I only drink at the weekend, having the odd glass of wine in the week. As much as I love wine and vodka, it doesnt really do me any favours short term or long term apart from at the time as long as you are not drowning your sorrows!

Not had a drop for 23 years don't miss it at all

Chronic hangovers stopped me "binge" drinking 5 years ago, I went on a bit of a bender at the Christmas, drinking everyday and night for ten days. A 3 day stay in hospital after vomiting blood stopped me drinking in my tracks. I don't judge anyone that enjoys a drink, that's their choice, but my money is hard enough to come by without blowing it on drink. Il have a good drink at a wedding, christening etc then im ill for 3 days, but if im honest it wouldn't bother me if I never had another alcoholic drink again. Iv never understood anyone who can have a massive session then claim to feel great the next day either!

I wouldn't say I feel great, but I do have more energy. Usually the day ends with me feeling a little dehydrated but the morning after is no bother for me at all. I can have a dozen or so whisky's and not even notice. Give me three cans of cider though and I'll be sick as a dog both later in the evening and for most of the next day! No idea why!

I never drink to get pished, I drink because I like the taste of the Cognacs and Whiskies I enjoy. Tend to stop when start getting drunk as the hangovers are not worth it.

Ohh and the Ales/ Wines /Ports/ Liquers especially home made or hip flask varieties.

I have not had a touch of alcohol at all in 7 years. No particular reason for it.I was a musician from the age of 17 to 23 so made the most of it when I could but stopped when I got into my career.Really fancied a beer the last few weeks for some reason.Alcohol cripples so many people and their families, seen it first hand but its all down to moderation I feel.May well be trying out a few new ales in the run up to Christmas!
