henry d
I had a sort out recently and had a few duff reloads and a fair few high velocity .22rf rounds and today I handed them in to the local police station, which means I can now reload some more. It took 10 minutes and it is a bit of a weight off my mind as I never want to go over my limit, which it would only be too easy to do if you are not too careful. Anyone else done this? al4x
why not just pull the reloads?
moor man
why not just pull the reloads? +1 and why not just shoot the .22lr? or give it away to someone with a .22lr (and cert). Im too tight to throw away powder, bullets, brass and primers. Personally, the less involvement with Firearms Dept / plod, the better, nothing to hide but it just seems to make sense. Paul223
It'll add to their stats and go against us in the long term
henry d
The .222 reloads were 55gn bullets, which don`t work in my rifle, and there was only a dozen or so, the 6.5 were someone else`s homeloads so I did not know how many times the brass was loaded and I am sure he crimped them as I tried to pull them but to no avail. I could have fired the rf`s but I don`t have the time. Now they are gone I can load a good few that I need for competitions and plinking as I have plenty of game/vermin rounds. rem708
If you are that close to your permitted to keep quota then its time to have it increased Ammo for target and ammo for hunting are quite different and should not be lumped together. Ask for decent amounts of each.

fieldwanderer
Handed a rifle in once (a well knackered s/a) and they were unbelievably touchy over it, "put it under the chair and don't touch it, someone will be along soon" - it was in a slip and not pointing anywhere but the floor. I'd do it again but only if I REALLY had to, did prove the firearms people can work quickly if they want to though.

Surely handing in that which you can not use, do not wish to use for whatever reason is not a bad thing but a positive action. Not handing them in and going over your limit would be far worse. But I do agree in raising your limits as to run that close seems a little daft.... unless your limit is very large and you have just lost count! Good that it is all sorted - what was the polices reaction? Edited August 12, 2013 by NickB65
henry d
I do have a fairly large limit, but will try to get it increased at renewal as I still shoot a fair few foxes and deer and need at least 100-150 rounds of 6.5 competition ammo a year. Police were good, the guy at the desk was nonplussed as he was not sure what to do, but I rang HQ before I went so they told him to get the FEO to deal with it, quick count up, into sealed bags and sign both bits of paper, one for me one for them and that was it. Breastman
Yep i've done it too, didn't have a bullet puller at the time and the rounds were taking up valuable space in my allowance so it took them down the local nick. There was a fresh-from-training PC behind the desk who couldn't wait to have a look at them! Took about 5 minutes

My thinking exactly. They've also got better things to do (like sort out our variations, renewals or applications) than mess about with surplus ammo. By the way; an RFD can receive ammo with no questions asked and no paperwork. Seems more sensible than unnecessarily drawing police attention to yourself. nabbers
Hmm, I have heard of some right stitch ups by the police, google Ian Puddick, and some massive blunders! Last thing I would want is them holding an evidence bag of ammo with my dna and fingerprints all over it,
RossEM
I handed in an old knackered Spanish side by side a couple of years back into Aylesbury police station, phoned ahead and there was no problem whatsoever. Did get a lot of odd looks from the people in the front office though! I did take it first of all to a gun shop to ask if they could dispose of it, but the manager showed me a 9' x 9' room full of guns (no exaggeration) waiting to be disposed of. Funnily enough, most of them were old knackered Spanish side by sides...
