keg
finger up ur nose on way home from wrk nowt better in my opinion I remember a few years ago, travelling through Leeds city centre I saw a gorgeous lady in her late 30s ( I was in my early 20s) All was well until I saw her well manicured and red index finger straight up to the second knuckle... quality. goodo123
how can it be a poor argument? 70 is the limit, end of story. I get sick of these bigheaded types, bombing up behind you flashing their lights even though they are breaking the law, telling you to get out of 'their' way. If you want to drive like Senna, go and live in Germany where 120 is allowed. Because it's the law? If your in the middle lane for no reason then your causing a obstruction, even if it is for people speeding. Two wrongs don't make a right. If your car read 70 and you were actually doing 65 then why shouldn't you get fined for causing an obstruction? It's nobodys right to pick and choose what highway rules they want to follow. norfolk dumpling
No motorways in Norfolk - we prefer grass up the middle of our roads.

If you want to drive like Senna, go and live in Germany where 120 is allowed. Sticking to the speed limit is no justification for lane hogging-hence why the Police are clamping down on it. If you are allowed to ignore this law then surely i and everyone else can ignore the speed limit? You cant pick and choose which parts of the highway code you're going to follow and which parts to ignore.

Sian
Maybe I am stupid but if we are all supposed to be in the left lane and the middle lane is for overtaking those going slower than the speed limit with the intention of coming back into the left lane, then why have a third lane or indeed any more lanes as some motorway do?
henry d
Indeed, but if you always drive in the left lane, you too will be overtaking frequently. The slow lane is typically full of HGV's. If there are 3 lanes, and the overtaking/fast lane is free - then by all means overtake the person in the middle lane. No such lanes... Maybe I am stupid but if we are all supposed to be in the left lane and the middle lane is for overtaking those going slower than the speed limit with the intention of coming back into the left lane, then why have a third lane or indeed any more lanes as some motorway do? Only stupid question is the one not asked, the middle and RH lanes are for overtaking and the reason is that there may be slow traffic in LH lane being overtaken by sub 70mph traffic and others overtaking them in RH lane, but mainly it it for traffic flow and access for emergency services. We have both 3 lanes and hard shoulder along with 2 lanes and no hard shoulder roads nearby and the 2 lanes were a nightmare to get to RTC`s as there is little room for manoeuvring traffic out of the way of the emergency services. junctiontwo
It's nothing to do with being bigheaded, if you have not moved over after 20-30 secs into an obviously clear lane, then you deserve to be flashed or undertaken. You are not a traffic policeman. +
jasper3
There is nothing worse than getting behind a car doing 65 in the middle lane when your poxy vehicle can only do 70 at a push, and you have dave the sports driver coming down at 100mph in lane 3 ....... but the question is..how long do you stay in the middle lane if there are lorries every 100mts doing 56mph and your doing 70 mph, I know some people have said to me, before now , about a stretch of M4 motorway from the toll bridge heading west... that lane 1 turns into an exit on several occasions... I have actually struggled getting into lane 2 on more than one occasion when traffic has been sporadic i think it will be a hard one to police
junctiontwo
If we had 100-lane motorways those that insist on driving in lane 2 now would end up in lanes 98 & 99. I also think that many drivers are actually afraid to move left because of the big, scary lorries

team tractor
Not so long back I left a decent gap in front on the A38 at 70mph and I had the police pull in front of me to the point of dam dangerous with no gap . The problem as said already is if you leave a gap in front you'll have an idiot pull in but who gets the fine ? If the police haven't seen the whole incident. Darno
Why is everyone calling it te middle lane! It is an over-taking lane, same as the outside and should only be used for overtaking! Granted, if your sat in it at 70mph, then no-one should technically pass you! But people do and I think sticking in it to prove a point just winds people up, and a motorway of wound up drivers is not a good thing! joe soapy
Its daft, changing lanes is the most dangerous part of everyday motorway driving for a car doing 70 to be continually diving in and out of a 56 mph stream is nuts and will increase accidents.
keg
I disagree, why is changing lanes dangerous? it's only dangerous if a driver is not aware of their surroundings and where the traffic is relevant to them. It's situational awareness and if they are not aware and constantly checking mirrors and looking ahead then they really should not be on the road. You have highlighted a problem, many drivers get on the motorway and go into autopilot. It was called the middle or fast lane at the inception of the motorways. A good series sometimes shown on BBC4 is "The secret Life of the Motorway" very interesting...

ack-ack
Its certainly highlighted who is / isnt a regular M-way user this thread has!! I had to go up to peterborough from kent a month past and a workmate drove. He didnt have a clue on the motorway and it was quite unsettling for me as passenger. When we're buzzing about the lanes of our district at work i always feel like hes a very safe pair of hands. keg
Agree Ack Ack, my Mrs was a regular M way user but as she only does 3 miles a day these days, she has become a nervous wreck. What made me realise how nervous she was, was when we were on the M1 she was nearly in tears " no one will let me out" she said. No surprise, she did not have her indicator out, that's how nervous she was.

joe soapy
If motorway driving scares you stay at home!!!!! I do avoid if possible, having said that , i have driven in the states where there is much less lane changing than here, overtake either side, most drive on cruise control and very precisely match speed with other cars. result very little overtaking or lane changing, and although peak speeds are a lot lower, the overall average is faster. Found it very difficult coming home on motorway from gatwick with cars constantly changing from 50 mph to 100mph and back again
