Spot the Woody

I had a phone call midmorning yesterday did I want to go shooting, silly question ,DB had no work so we arranged to pick him up a 12.00 . We set out to look at a rape stubble field that I had seen birds on Sunday when I was being the taxi driver to my wife and daughter to a car boot sale. We pulled on to the field and it was devoid of birds , we watched it for ten minutes and a few birds passed over it but did not land. We left and had a drive round to look at other stubbles and the only birds we could see in any numbers were next to the release pens and we would not even ask the question. We drove to the farm and had a chat to the farmer and he said we could shoot the rape stubble but it will be ploughed on Thursday so we decided to have a look and if the birds had built up we would set up. Returning to the field it had about ten birds down but lots were now flying over it in three flightlines so we set up. It was now 13.30 and we put out ten frozen birds and I had microwaved two for the magnet. Disaster, the magnet arm was broken , so we put them out as angels. It was reading 28 degrees in the Disco when I moved it to the shade. We then encountered our next problem we had groups of Stock Doves coming to the pattern in fours and fives with woodys in with them so you had to be very sure of your target when you shot. It just stopped at 16.30 and we packed up at 17.00 with one hundred and thirty seven in the bag . It was frustrating but excellent shooting and a great day.

good bag given the conditions there PC. not too sure about the stock doves being low in numbers, we have a lot up here this year. takes a good experienced eye to spot the difference as they approach.

What i was trying to say is that we had a great number of Stock Doves who seem to have moved into the area on the stubbles . More than we have seen before. The woodys were quite happy to fly with them and come to the pattern.

sorry PC i confused the job, i meant they are protected because of low numbers and that's what i'm not sure about as there loads around our permissions.

Thanks for your kind comments, I to would normally be able to spot Stock Doves before they hit the pattern but on Wednesday the very bright sun was behind the hide and for some reason it made the recognition difficult . Or it may be that as I'm drawing my old age pension my eyes are giving up.
