scarter
Hi guys I'm looking at getting a jimmy I need it to do a bit of off roading too, lamping around the tracks in winter time, picking up on the shoot, putting my pigeon/goose decoys in and lamping on the field in the summer time. What are people's views on these jeeps? Also what are the soft top ones like? Thanks Simon
humperdingle
Mine is great, but will be moving it on soon as i'm not using it for shooting any more. Great for the heavy snow during winter Looked at soft tops but the security of the top is naff so went for fixed. Mpg not great at 30-32 but fine for short journeys. 00buck
they are a gr8 little jeep not bad on fuel and fold the back seats down and can get all your gear in I will have 1 for sale in weeks
Fib new
Great for a lot of shooting-jobs. Not very good for driving around your goose-decoys because of it's size -at least for the amount of decoys and the size of them we use over here... Superb for lamping jobs because of it's weight and 4x4 capabilities!
DannyNCC
Check for oil around the swivels Bit small but not bad
scarter
There only goose shells so pack down small, what are they like on the motorway? One of the places I shoot is 65 miles away and I use the motorway
Lampwick
Wouldn't fancy 65 miles in it on a regular basis! But they are great off road! http://forums.pigeonwatch.co.uk/forums/topic/217137-jim-jimny-jim-jimny/?hl=jimny
Fib new
Not great on motorways, not extremely bad either. Bit better than my 200tdi defender 90 I reckon -especially when it's not a softtop. I still think they are a bit to small, but that's just my opinion. If you don't need it take out the back seat. scarter
What makes them bad for driving on the motorway? Lol Going back to the soft tops what are they like ? Basically I will use the jeep 4 miles a day bak and forth to work,to the girl friends in a weekend and where ever we go and mayb a 120 mile round trip to my shoot mayb twice a month during the duck season. Is it bare able on the motorways for that amount? Edited September 29, 2013 by scarter

Is it bare able on the motorways for that amount? I sold my Jimny a while ago so have no reason to be biased now. The fuel efficiency was poor to be honest against my Berlingo van 32mpg against 40+ and the small petrol tank made it very noticeable. It did drive as smoothly as a car on the road but past 60ish it wasn't very controllable and I wouldn't want to do many emergency stops over that speed cos they're just too bouncy. It was always a struggle for space in the back and too small in the front reallyl. It did get me to work in some pretty awful weather last winter though and seemed very capable off road. I don't really miss it now it's gone and not having it as a second vehicle is saving me a lot of money but having one as an entry level 4x4 makes a lot of sense. castletyne
I would go for the Vitara instead i thought about the jimny but found i could get a much better Vitara for the money Also the insurance was cheaper for me
Davyo
I looked at a jimney but decided on a vit, goes anywhere and comfortable, brilliant for lamping, put a couple of sunroofs in and loads of space with the rear seats down. scotslad
Nothing wrong with the jimny's on the road as long as u don't want to drive faster than 70 or 80, my old one could pull my quad and trailer at 70 no prob's, far far better than the old SJ's which were a nightmare on roads and esp on corners. Used to just take the back seats out as soon as we got 1 to give u the exrtra room, they are small esp with much gear and dogs, fuel consumption is rubbish but if not doing high mileage not a problem Nice and light off road, take some beating and don't make a mess off fields the way heavier motors do even when stuck, seen me wedging the throttle and pushing the motor out myself a few times then chasing after it to stop it. Hornet 6
I've had mine for about 5 months now and loving it. Around town and short trips it is averaging about 33mpg, that includes lamping once a week. Longer runs, and there have been a few see's an easy 40mpg with a high of 43mpg. Neil. Salop Matt
If I fill our Jimny with regular unleaded it costs about £40 and am getting 250/260 Miles from it so 36mpg ish (this is just knocking about to work and back). It is small but does everything I want as 95%+ of the time theres only me or me and the dogs in it anyway. Motorways I sit at 60/65mph with the HGV`s and can cover plenty of miles. Off road its great and goes any where and that includes in the snow up hill and down dale. Ive also towed other vehicles in the snow with it and also towed the brother-in-laws LR90 when it wouldnt start. It gets me around the shoot for beating and regularly the dog box has the dog in it and game too so takes enough for me. It doesnt use so much as an egg cup of oil a year (14k miles). Another good point is it heats up real quick so in the cold winter its a blessing. Last month I used ours for a lamping session and had two big boes in the back with 62 bunnys in, a dive bottle along side, a rifle and slip, spare tatt and my usuall bag with tow ropes warning triangle and basic tools etc and then I ran 2 x ligtforce lamps with filters and kept my clubrite on charge along with my mobile phone. One of us drove and one shot we got on fine (we were on tarmac for most of it but i wouldnt hesitate to do it off road in the wet and mud or snow. If more storeage was needed I would just get some cheap roof bars and and a roof box. ATB Matt

sandspider
One thing - Jimnys are quiet when idling round a field. I like mine!

brianjb61
I've had an 08 plate one for about 20months now and love it. as theres only me and the dog most of the time I can leave the back seat down and there's plenty of room for all my gear and the dog.it got me everywhere last winter in the snow, even my wife was happy using it to get to work and back in the bad weather. It's been more than cabable over the farm even on the road tyres it came with. I check mpg every now and then and it returns 36/37 a gallon. As someone else said its quite happy mixing it with the trucks at about 65/70 on the motorway. They are great little motors! I think the last of the softtops are on a 05 plate.
