Rcdavison1984
Good Morning my fellow PW members I got my SGC through last week and still waiting to take the plunge and buy my first SG. I’ve set myself a budget of £500 for my first buy as I need everything else that comes with it (slip, cleaning kit, carts etc) I’ve come across this in my local shop and was wondering if its a decent gun? http://www.gunstar.co.uk/Shotgun/Beretta-S56-E-gun-for-sale-gs150798.aspx I know they are an older model now being made in the 70s but hoping it will be of a better quality being a Beretta, rather than buying a newer gun of a less reputable name for similar price? Mainly for the odd clay shoot once or twice a month, and the odd invited shoot (if I’m lucky enough) but wont be getting used a large amount as im planning on buying a semi auto in the near future for rough shooting on my pending permissions (steel proof and 3-3.5" chamber) So basically for the price of the s56e...would you lot recommend it? Thanks in advance Rcdavison1984
Scully
Can't say I'm familiar with the model and with it having a straight hand stock I'm assuming its a game gun,and possibly therefore fixed choke.Even if quite tightly choked I don't consider this a problem at all but some may suggest a multi choke would offer you wider choices for use as a clay gun, which is good advice. If It's choked 1/4 and 1/2 then I would say buy it,if it's choked tighter then I would still say buy it;there is always the option to have the chokes opened up if you wanted to. It's a Beretta, and all the better for being an older model in my opinion.
Rcdavison1984
Cheers Scully, the shop offer a 7 day free trail so even if i do buy and dont get on with it i can always take it back for a full refund ... thats if they still have it for sale Thanks again pal
JohnfromUK
I have a model S57 EL, which I suspect uses the same basic action. Its been faultless over many years. Be aware that the straight hand stock (and are they double triggers I see?) will limit resale/trade in value considerably.
mudpatten
It may not be an issue for you but most of the older Beretta`s had a 2 3/4" chamber, rather than the modern ones which are all 3".
HDAV
For a first gun i think there is better for £500 i would suggest a single trigger and the most important thing is how it fits.... http://www.guntrader.co.uk/Guns-For-Sale/Winchester_Shotgun_6500-Sporter_For-Sale_130905105120001 http://www.guntrader.co.uk/Guns-For-Sale/Lanber_Shotgun_Sporting-Delux_For-Sale_130922180553890 http://www.guntrader.co.uk/Guns-For-Sale/Miroku_Shotgun_6000_For-Sale_130529124117001 Just some other examples

Lord Geordie
Had a S56E many moons ago. Had issues with misfires but once sorted was a nice enough thing. I personally think £450 is a tad rich for a S56E though. I would expect a £400 ceiling price. Even then, in as new cond. For £650 ^ you can get a more modern beretta if you shop about! Cumbrian
I believe that these early Berettas had rather different internals from later models, including different springs (V springs?). These are likely to make repairs/maintenance more difficult/expensive. I'm a Browning owner through and through, but, if I were buying a Beretta, I would buy a later model, single trigger, more or less the same as the current ones, but perhaps 10 or 20 years old when the quality was better I suspect. Rcdavison1984
Thanks for all the input...Went to look at it and decided against it. It was in good condition to be fair but didn't fancy the double trigger etc....the search continues
welshwarrior
There good guns but the single trigger ejector would be a better buy. Parts can still be had, check the ejectors these guns had longer legs than the new 68 series gun and suffered from bending. I think that's over priced for a double trigger gun
Gunman
Old ,no spares ,needs to be real cheap . That aside I had use of one once and they handled quite well as I recall .Nothing wrong with double triggers ,after all we managed for 100 years with them .
