activeviii
Well he was this morning but now im not so sure. I have had a trial came set up on the bins, there being knocked over and owner not very happy. went out in the week and changed the card over, popped into the farm house and downloaded the card with the land owner. in the dark, 3 in the morning is a buck playing silly beggers with the feed bin. Said I would deal with the menace said my good bye's and managed a walk on the tops in small patch of over grown wood. A Fallow buck walked straight into me, broadsided at 40 meters. i was watching him on with the + on the vitals but, its not the first time i have done it, i let it wander on by. 2 reasons. I was on my own and no way to drag this beast. it was massive and easy 200lb on its feet. It is being left and i will watch in in the rut and after to see how he does. Im not really a trophy hunter so as long as land owner does see it i think it will be good stock. So i leave this buck to carry on, i walk a little further, almost to the boundary when this Pricket came walking straight at me. im up on the sticks waiting for it to stop, though the scope it looks just a tender size, so as long as it keeps walking towards me it will be harvested. the wee beast spots me, but i think because im on the rifle, in camo, is cant work me out but its not happy, with this it runs, the wrong way, then the stupid animal turns and runs straight at me, stops 20 meters away stamping its feet. lol. I don't like necking deer, i have done it in the past but i prefer to boiler room them. I only have to wait a few seconds and he bounces away a few meters and stops on the broadside. Bang, that will do. now it the problem. my Ghillie isnt here and the light is fading, i need to get across 2 fields before i can get the car near. out with the drag rope and close on to an hour of pulling, swearing and sweating, i get to the top of the ride so i can now go get the car. 20 minute walk to the car and more than one chance of another but no, one is enough for this old get in an evening. Sorry no photos as its now pitch black, im in a wood, with a dead deer and very strange noises all around, is it me being a wimp or do others get the jitters. lmao So, this morning i get out and onto the ground before first light, walk on one area but no signs at all. get back to motor and go to change the cards in the camera. i pull up, get out and look across the field, up to a wooded area, on the fence line is a nice buck, the same one that was on the camera, or so i thought. out with the range finder, 211 meters. grab the 6.5x55 and get on the floor, t get a shot i need to slide under a gate, up a bit of a slope with out this buck clocking me, well chuffed with myself as i flip the bipod open and the buck is still browsing the hedgerow on the wood. A quick pin with the range finder and its 197. that will do. i give 2" over and squeeze the trigger. down he falls. very happy with that as i thought it was the buck the land ower wanted removed. A quick text to him to say the Bang was me, the buck is down. 2 minutes later he is pulling up on side of road, he's off to shoot pheasants, a quick chat and he is over the moon. now maybe his bins will stay standing. I deal with it, and i have the carp porter in the car so 200 meters is an easy one, well it would be if i wasn't an old get and i could life the darn thing. huff and puff and its in the plasterers bath in the back of the car I go and change the cards on the cameras and head off home. i hate trying to lift these beast into the chiller. the older one, in jacket but head and ankles off weigh in at 92lb. this mornings one, the one on the left in the chiller, came in at 140lb. the other one i saw in the week was half the size again. so heaven knows what he will pull the scales around to, all sorted, say hello to wife, get the kettle on and plug the card into the computer... Oh Bum! looks like land owner is still going to have feed bin issues. these photos are off the one camera on the one feed bin. the one on the left on this photo is the one i fell this morning that's 3 different bucks on the bin over the last few nights and the i have one of a different buck from last week which is the one i thought i knocked over this morning, turned out to be a different one. Sorry the about is rather long winded. but hay! im tired. lol. all the best Phil.

activeviii
Cheers for all the comments Gents. It's not often i have much to talk about. It has been very hard work to get this permission and im on tender hooks every time i go over. i do give a lot of the venison back to land owner and friends. This is what is left of the livers, One is a smooth plain Pate. one is a coarse pate with a lot of mace and pepper and the other. Carnberry, Brandy, Pistachio nut and Pancetta. It worked out rather nice, shame i there is only one block left. oh well! looks like i have a new recipe that works very well with cheese and a good Brandy. All the best Phil. activeviii
And there was me thinking deer wouldn't eat my feed from the feeders... how wrong was I!! Oh my goodness don't they just feed. Spoor on the floor around the bins is the give away. i think there's about 40 bins on the one part and its like the Serengeti with tracks around them. I just feel rather privileged to be able to spent the time around the place. great watching the youngsters dancing around early in the morning and even funnier watching them trying to play with the calves that are around. hendersons
Not long winded at all, just a good factual story. if you had met activeviii you would know this is a rarity. nice pictures though and the pate tastes great
Jockdude
Enjoyed your write up! The pate looks good. I make my own with pheasant liver, it takes a while to get enough as the pheasant is a protected bird here on Jersey and we have to have a special license to "pest control" them to stop crop damage on the Jersey Royals!!
