demonwolf444
As title, i know of someone who knows of someone who says he's found a shotgun in the attic, the guy i know of has said to the guy who found it he would put it in his cert if possible to keep everything legal. I am trying to find out for my friend exactly how you go about entering a "found" shotgun on to your certificate, does it need to be taken to an RFD, do the police need to be called, how do you take it to the RFD without being in possetion of a unregistered firearm. I know the police would rather have it on ticket than off, so assuming that the gun in question meets S2 requirements how do you go about getting everything legal. Preferably advice from those who have been through this or links to reputable sources, google fu is not turning up much but will be on the phone to BASC tomorrow to clarify. saddler
Take to an rfd Get it checked...if an old gun may be out of proof, antique, etc. May also be a section 1 or section 5 depending on barrel length/stock/magazine capacity. If section 2 it can be put on an sgc
Pastiebap
Contact the police, if you don't know how the gun got there, there could be a chance it has been stolen.
GingerCat
If it's sawn off and has a balaclava with it call the police, otherwise I would call and rfd and tell them I was on my way, and then take it there. Get it checked and added to my cert. If it's beyond hope then deactivate it and pop it on a way as homage to great uncle Albert or whoever. Paul223
As saddler says rfd, if there's anything untoward the police will be in touch in due course, if your first port of call is the police then a it may get taken away never to be seen again and or b it could be added to some firearms related crime figures just because it went through their system
Paul223
Oh aye, if the rfd doesn't much like the look of it from a proof perspective he can still enter it onto your sgc and you can keep it whilst working out what to do, he just can't sell it to you
demonwolf444
Thanks guys will be calling BASC anyway tomorrow but thank you for your thoughts. Don't want my mate and the person that found it to be taking it to RFD only to get accused of possession of illegal firearm or something ridiculous. The general consensus seems to be take it to a decent RFD. I know good RFD so will be in touch with him Edited November 20, 2013 by demonwolf444
filzee
My friend went through this when his granddad died and he cleared out his cabinet. In the back of the cabinet was a very old shotgun which no one knew about. My friend contacted his FEO and explained. The FEO made an appointment to come round and inspect the weapon. After inspection he was happy that the gun wasn't illegal (guess he ran the serial number) and then took the details leaving the gun with my mate (already an sgc holder). My mate got his certificate back with the new gun added too it. Simple
Nikk
Seems like a better idea to have the RFD to come to the friends house than take the chance driving with an unregistered shotgun in the boot of his car? I know the odds are almighty small but that is s*ds law Edited November 20, 2013 by Nikk
welshwarrior
Take it to the RFD it can be entered into his log as an anonymous hand in. He will I from the police and invite them to inspect it most give them 1 month before they sell or destroy the gun.
lister1
I went through this recently. my friend found a 9mm gatden gun in his grandads outbuilding. i phoned basc who got a bit too excited, shall we say. i then got a bit worried so i phoned my firearms officer (feo) and she said if the barrell is over a certain length and it is a smooth bore, all i needed to do was send a letter to the firearms dept withh all the details on, i.e. gun make, serial no , caliber and my details etc. then put the details onto my certificate and all was ok. just phone you feo and explain the situation. Of course this assuming its a smooth bore shotgun and not a firearm type gun.
kent
Think I should arrange through an RFD. If the guy has no ticket then time to call in a favour from your usual RFD. What might worry me was if the gun was previously stolen or used in crime, though to be fair many guns went into lofts etc. post Hungerford which with hindsight was a massive mistake on the part of the authorities. Most of these guns were not officially recorded to anyone outside of the dealers, hopefully its one of them

Preferably advice from those who have been through this or links to reputable sources, google fu is not turning up much but will be on the phone to BASC tomorrow to clarify. If it's section 2 then just write it onto someones ticket and notify the cops. The ticket has a space for the person supplying it to state what their authority to possess it is; just write "Found in attic" or something. The police won't care as it's a gun coming into the system of registration. Alternatively, take it to an RFD. An RFD does not need to record where a gun has come from in his register. Remember though that it is someones property regardless of what it is so it cannot simply be confiscated from it's owner. Even if it's section 5 it is still property and may be worth something. J. bostonmick
I would have a look see what it is if its been there any length of time with no proper care chances are its pitted.in which case unless it's of purdey grade I would take it to rfd as scrap.
