jfgpm
Last weekend we had been invited to a driven hunt on hares. In the morning everybody set his bet how much hares will be shot during the day followed by the speach of the tenant 27 hunters and 22 beaters turned for half a day the hunting ground up side down Beside hares we shot some jays and a pair of foxes After every drive the son of the tenant took care of the fresh game At the end we shot 54 hares, 8 jays and 2 foxes. At the Schüsseltreiben afterwards the hunting court meets to review the missbehavior of some hunters and to condemn them (what was actually very funny)
Sean Richo
Not really my cup of tea but each to there own I suppose if it's in an area that has a high population and need to be controlled that's fair enough but personally I don't shoot hares. If you like that sort of thing it looks like you had an excellent day thanks for sharing pictures it's interesting to see something slightly differant well done getting the Jays and fox. Underdog
Very interesting how things are done off this tiny island. Lost count of the old timers that shot driven deer over here years ago telling me their tales. Where is the game destined? U. Cranfield
Great pictures and that looks like a very successful day, with some good eating (not the foxes). jfgpm hasn't put his location down, but its Germany (or nearby). We use to have Hare Drives on the North Kent marshes back in the 70's, but like the Coot Shoot and the Fox Drive they faded into the past. I remember them as sporting days, with a great social side to them.
pigeonblasterian
Good bag of hares there.Hare drives not usually done till February time near me.

This kind of hunting right is connected to the property. Because we are interested to be able to hunt also in 100 years we take care of the game and always hunt in a sustainable way (the game is really wild, so no breeding and releasing etc.).The saying - Use it or loose it - describes in my opinion the situation here quite well. In estats where nobody cares for the small game the numbers decline rapidly even nobody shoots them. Not so here where people feel responsible for "their" hunting ground and the Wild.Underdog, on 21 Nov 2013 - 6:26 PM, said:Very interesting how things are done off this tiny island.Lost count of the old timers that shot driven deer over here years ago.Where is the game destined?U."Driven" deer, roe deer and wild boars is quite common over here but in a different way than driven hares. More with dogs and only a small number of beaters. The hares are gutted, skinned and will be sold to the people in that area

tlennox
It looks like an excellent day, I would love to experience a driven day like this. I love the tradition and respect given to the quarry at the end of the hunt. Great read.
jfgpm
Thank you Cranfield.People over here like hares very much and most times the tenant isn't able to serve all his customers.Location is now set. It is Germany - BavariaWhy did you stop hunting hares, coos and foxes ?The social side at this hunts is in my opinion the most important part. After the hunt you have dinner together, sing, play music and the "hunting court" meets ;-)pigeonblasterian, on 21 Nov 2013 - 6:44 PM, said:Good bag of hares there.Hare drives not usually done till February time near me.We are only allowed to hunt hares from 15th of October until end of the year. @Grasshopper: It was the first time at such a hunt we spotted 3 foxes during the day. That was a slap in the face of the tenant

Sean Richo
I understand completely the use it or loose it! By the way you seem to be kitted it in some top quality gear there especially the boots. Seems like a well organised outfit. Would there normally be a charge for a driven day on hare? Would there normally be a charge for a driven day on hare? When you walk all the day those shoes are worth it. They are quite good hiking shoes. Those guys use them for hunting or when they work in the forest.About the charge thing. It depends. There are a lot of driven hunts on hooved game all over Germany. You pay from 50 to open end Euros for one day hunting.Because the small game is quite rare in Germany most of this hunts (in our region) only invite people. Bigger small game hunts (in an other part of Bavaria) sometimes invited good shooting hunters who buy a certain amount of the bag afterwards. But you have to know somebody to be invited anyway and those numbers of good hunts decline. Where hunters shot up to 250-300 hares and 100-150 pheasants in the past (everything wild) they canceled this year hunting because of to small game numbers. In our region you normally invite only good friends / family.Your don't have to pay for the day, but who has manners pays a small amount for the offered food (10-20 Euros) and the beaters (10 Euros). If there is also a Jagdgericht they will charge you on top in a sympatetic way because of all kinds of so called misbehaviors (this is just a joke for the evening and the fine depends on what you can effort). They will always find something where the can charge you ;-) )Whitebridges, on 21 Nov 2013 - 7:24 PM, said:Anyone know the breed of the dog, second picture down?Big Mat is right. It is a wire-haired dachshund (=badger dog) in German Rauhaardackel or Rauhaarteckel. al4x
lovely pics, we do the odd driven hare day and it is challenging shooting at times, oh the joys of having a badger dog! makes me want to get one just so I can upset people calling it one
nagantino
A great days sport by fellow sportsmen. I well remember my father bringing home a hare he had shot and we all loved stroking the dead animal and looking forward to the eating of it. I've shot 2 hares but the last one did it for me. I have secumbed to the old Irish superstition that its bad luck to shoot the hare and I won't hunt them again. But that's just me.
jfgpm
... we do the odd driven hare day ... oh the joys of having a badger dog! ... So you also hunt hares as we do over hear. It seems not very common. Why is there such a difference in GB ? They are BADGER dogs. Most people have know idea that most of their dogs today are hunting dogs. Especially the little ones tend to be BADGER DOGS ... I have secumbed to the old Irish superstition that its bad luck to shoot the hare and I won't hunt them again. But that's just me. Good to be no Irish folk. Otherwise I would rott in hell
FOXHUNTER1
Enjoyed that .....a great day was had by all . jfgpm
...apart from the Turks banging away at them at ranges up to 100 yds This would be stopped immediately by the boss and would be fined at the hunting court in the evening B)
