bluesj
Good evening ladies and gentlemen of Pigeon Watch, I’m on the look out for a cheap lightweight 12 gauge for a friend’s daughter to use. She's only a lightweight her self and would blow away in a stiff breeze but she’s no wimp. Would like an over and under single trigger at around the 6lb mark, 26” ish barrels (I think shorter barrels would be better balanced for her) if possible ejector and multi chokes would be nice but don’t want to spend a lot of money.Any recommendations? wraivi
Franchi Falconette would be a good start. Purpose built to be light weight. Best thing would be to go along to a ground and try a few for fit and feel....fit being most important for obvious reasons. Good luck in your quest and enjoy. Cawdor118
Forget multichoke adds weight look for a 26" game or skeet gun The weight difference must be damn near negligible?
IEH
I've always preferred fixed chokes for reasons of balance rather than weight. If you can find one the 686L Beretta (lightweight game) comes in at 6lbs 12ozs in 28" barrels, so presume a bit lighter in 26".
peteri
Just one thought (well two actually) - firstly Beretta Ultralight, but surely getting such short barrels will make them even more stock heavy? Also - does it have to be 12bore? My (tiny) wife is loving her 20g Silver Pigeon Pete
Thunderbird
As we all know, with a light gun (for the reasons the op suggests) must also come light cartridges otherwise it'll bang her six ways till Tuesday. I've got a Franchi Falconet and for a woman or a kid with 28gm clay loads it bangs very hard. Game gun for 5-10 shots fine, but 100 sporting with something fast - ouch. bluesj
Some good points. Most of the are out of my price range for this particular gun as it is more of a 'try out shooting' gun. She's used my Medallist with 21gram and 28 gram it’s just the gun is a bit front heavy for her.Would like a 20 but for the above reason don't think it will happen. All though I would quite like a nice little 20Will have to have a look at the auctions and see what is up for grabs
HDAV
The weight difference must be damn near negligible? It's more the balance every gram infront of the forend counts... Especially with a shorter lighter stock. There are a few around 26/27" shortened stock guns between £3-500 or there is the hatsan youth 20 gauge auto. Lord Geordie
As we all know, with a light gun (for the reasons the op suggests) must also come light cartridges otherwise it'll bang her six ways till Tuesday. Top advise! My lad started at about 8 with a 410 and it was too heavy for him. The shorter the barrel, the less the front weight! Lighter carts mean less likelyhood of them not wanting to go again and again. As for 20g prices! A few came up recently on the sales section. A rather nice rizzini O/U side plate sporter was about £250 The beretta S56E was quite light in weight and you can pick them up cheaply enough if you shop about. I also think Bettinsoli did a lightweight shotgun too.
welshwarrior
Just be careful if you do go 20 bore some of them where 12 bores with a smaller hole bored down the same barrel making them heavier than the 12 the E Rizzini is one of them. Guest cookoff013
also try and get some subsonic ammunition, they are slow speed, but are an advantage, they cost alittle more but the satisfaction of a quality shell. i get really frustrated when the advice that is given is only partially right. and i say this from a technical point of view too. the biggest contribution to recoil is speed and shotweight. if you knock off the speed, it greatly reduces the recoil, if you also reduce the shot weight that does too. so instead of buying aload of guns the best option is to either find some decent ammunition, all the manufacturers sell them as xlr / subs / low recoil. redardless of gauge, what ever lightweight gun you decide to buy, get some of this soft ammunition. these specialist loads are only available for 12 and 20. and i would seriously ask you to consider a 20gauge.just for the lack of weight. hull do a 23gram subsonic. 200 /k lylevale do a 21gram subsonic 250/k once they grow into the gun, ie, build strength and muscle memory etc, then you can try other ammunition. i proof test ammunition, and the results are really interesting. with the information, you get a recoil number in N/s and the subsonics are 30% lower, my international ulta speed shells, really snappy, but they do push quite a few fps. instead of buying a gun to tame the recoil, knock the recoil off straight away. i reload exclusively for my little 12gauge sxs, subsonic 32g/#4s and #2s and it hits like a freight train. for "like" no recoil
