Fabhui
So I'm new to Shotguns and have just recently got myself a Winchester 101 XTR Sporter and in the deal came a slab of Gambore White Gold 24gm fibre size 8. Now I'm wondering when these are gone what's a good reliable cartridge to get that's not going to break the bank? Also anyone around the derby area know of anywhere that sells cartridges at a competitive price? Thanks for any help or info
Big Mat
When i get clay cartridges, i walk into the shop and ask whats cheap, never pay more than £40 for 250 Edited December 1, 2013 by Big Mat
simonix
I shoot Eley olympics. They shoot fairly smooth, give good enough breaks for me, and only cost £45 per 260, and £160 odd for a thou. :-)

Ttfjlc
Hull comp x, only shot the 28g version but so far the softest recoiling load to date, found them easier to get hold of than the 21g version Should of said softest recoiling to date for me personally

Fabhui
Thanks for the input fellas. Based on all of your advice, when I need to make my next purchase I think I'll try either Kent Velocity or Hull Comp X.
Guest cookoff013
RC2's do the job for me, £42.00 a slab. RC2 24g #9.5s are dynamite.

-Mongrel-
RC2 24g #9.5s are dynamite. Use 7.5's personally in 24g, do the job for sure.
GingerCat
Cheap and cheerful, most perform better than the shooter in anycase, no doubt someone will be along to say the fastest most expensive shell in the world with wool wad and hand forged shot it we might as well go home, personally I thinks it's bs. When you get to the level that cartridges matter that much you will be getting sponsored to shoot and writing for magazines.Kent velocity and compx 21g are very good and not expensive. aris
Does anyone know why there aren't inexpensive steel cartridges for clay use? The price of lead has been the excuse for higher cartridge prices thus far.
shoot and be safe
Eley 1st gets my first vote followed by hull superfast in my 70mm chambered gun. Only shot CompX 21 through my 65MM SxS to date. Not Impressed

aris
That's JC pricing not the best and steel will be a minority seller...http://www.essexgun.com/sportingcartridges.html They seem the same too. Perhaps I was expecting a greater price differential. Nice to see a shop selling cartridges at the 1000 rate, regardless of quantity though! ehb102
I've shot my way through every 21g 12G cartridge I can get my hands on and CompX are the nicest so far as I can tell. The pattern on the plate is a bit more regular, but more importantly the fibre 7.5, the plastic 7.5 and the plastic 9s all feel the same to me when I shoot them. Eley firsts were fine, and I didn't like Fiocchi blue. They broke clays but the feel through my hands was a little bit rougher. I'd happily shoot them though. My coach proved to be that the 21g cartridges can break rabbit clays at 60 yards. I can't break rabbit clays at 60 yards yet so the cartridges are out-performing me, even in the SxS! So whilst there's nothing to lose but my dignity I'm shooting whatever is cheapest and easily available.
