Brixsmaid
With the recent odd 24 hour showers we've been getting of late I need to get some new waterproof overtrousers (NOT trousers ), they need to be hard-wearing (will be used for proper beating - where you go through stuff not around it !), reliably and totally waterproof, ideally lightweight and well priced. I've searched and there is a lot of contradictory advice, unfortunately I have as yet to find a pair of OVER trousers that are actually waterproof, I've had wax, Baleno Flexothane, Army Gortex and none have been waterproof in proper all day rain, I get the feeling they are all waterproof until the first bramble/briar/blackthorn scrapes them! So I'm looking for actual recommends and I really don't want leggings! Cheers
bakerboy
I use Treggings from Top Gun, they seem to do the business, plus you can get them on and off over Wellies, and sit down and keep your Bum dry.
darren 67
Always been told that you can't beat mustow for waterproof gear. Not that I would know first hand coz im a bit reluctant to spend that sort of hard earned for beating. I usually wear mole skins with harkila chaps over them and a cheap waterproof jacket from decathlon for beating. When the days done there is a dry set of clothes in the motor to change into so not wet on way home if it all leaks.

When the days done there is a dry set of clothes in the motor to change into so not wet on way home if it all leaks. I've tried Musto (albeit second hand) and not found their gear very waterproof for what they'd like people to pay! I'm on Harkila leggings at the moment, but they don't seem very waterproof! But thanks anyway. I use Treggings from Top Gun, they seem to do the business, plus you can get them on and off over Wellies, and sit down and keep your Bum dry. Thanks As regards the leggings, treggings, chaps - at my age I don't need to try and explain a wet crutch anymore, the kids keep look at my future care home requirements, as it is , which is what I always get with non-full trousers, but so far even with full trousers I am getting wetter legs than I want! So here's hoping somebody has a tried and tested solution? But thanks so far, anyway.
jimmyb79
I always get my musto kit out in the rain. Technical tweed, leggings, jackets you name it. Never got wet in any of it. Their country over trousers are excellent.
PhilR
When I used to beat I had a coat and overtrousers from Wearite. They lasted me for six seasons. The keeper expected us to go through not round clumps of brambles so they were well used and performed without letting me down. They were green cloth material and not overly expensive. norfolk dumpling
Bought Seeland full length o/t's (as I alternate between wellies and leather boots. Have done several days beating in all conditions and they look good. Easy to get on too with strong Velcro fixings. Very light too.

An hour to carefully unpick the reflective bits and they last for years... TEH
blackbird
What ever you do not waste your money on Sherwood forest waxed overtrousers they are very poor.
WGD
The Seeland Crieff over trousers seem to be about the best I've had but they've not been hard worked yet. The Harkila leggings are not designed to be waterproof, they are rip stop so you can wear a light weight waterproof membrane beneath so that might be your best bet? FatFreddysCat
Not actually an over-trouser but you wear your normal clothes underneath. Stocking foot allows you to wear your normal boots. These are comfortable to walk in and although I've not used them for beating I've thrashed through plenty of riverbank brambles. http://www.fishingmad.co.uk/newbbsfww-bison-breathable-stocking-foot-waist-waders-m-l-xl-xxl-free-next-day-uk-delivery.html
Brixsmaid
Many thanks, so far. Lots of good ideas here for me to mull over - as previously mentioned: Musto - all have leaked in proper rain Deerhunter rain gear appears to be the same as my Baleno gear - which leaks, once the brambles get to it - I would appreciate a long-term wear report Seeland Crieff - interesting, I have a lot of their coats and they are 90% waterproof. Wearite gear sounds OK So please keep them coming, I have spent three days now beating/shooting (6 to 8 hours at a time) in torrential rain and gales and nothing has worked yet! So the more advice I can get the better. Has anyone tried tumble drying the Army Gortex or Deerhunter rubberised gear to see if it repairs the tiny pinholes that the brambles make and restores the waterproofing? MBW
+1 for firemans trousers easy to get hold of on fleabay I also like the trespass ones with the braces their only about a tenner and I got about three seasons out mine before chucking them away
mudpatten
Another vote for Wearite. I`ve had a pair of their waterproof overtrousers for 10 years! I bought another pair because the original ones were beginning to look worn and direputable but I still have`nt worn them `cos the old ones are still waterproof. A much underrated product that deserves to be better known than it is.
Brixsmaid
Thanks again Couple of questions regarding the Wearite over trousers: Do they have zipped lower legs for getting over boots and how do you rate/estimate their sizes, accurate (spot on what size you order), smaller or larger than the measurement suggest? ben0850
Have you tried washing your Goretex kit with nikwax or similar to see if that improves it? My winter mountaineering kit is either haglof or mountain equipment, both makes keep me dry for 14 hours or more in the Scottish mountains even belaying knelt in the snow etc. The only drawback would be the cost for using when beating. I have some cheaper Berghaus kit for at home on the farm and touch wood that's been ok although I do rewash it in Nikwax / tech wash on a reasonably regular basis. Yes - the Musto gear has been retreated - and afterwards is marginally better, I did ask Musto a few years ago and they weren't very convincing about their gear they seemed a bit concerned that shooting gear might come into contact with brambles etc., which could affect the waterproofness even if it is for shooting !! I haven't nikwax'd my cheap ex army Gortex - it's nearly as cheap to buy replacement ex army surplus as it is to use Nikwax on them!! Where do you find "cheaper Berghaus kit" my few bits were nearly as expensive as 'named' shooting kit !! Cheers

I guess by cheaper Berghaus I mean cheaper than my mountain kit. My three layer goretex mountaineering jacket was approx £350 whereas my farm jacket was around £100 from Cotswolds including my 10% BMC discount. Not sure on your location but Great Outdoors often have some good bargains, failing that the mrs gets her waterproof farm gear from Englebert Strauss and it stands up to some pretty grim weather. mudpatten
The Wearite overtrousers are very generously cut. Mine are the largest size since I`m 6`4" with a 44" waist and they are still roomy. The legs don`t have zips but are cut very wide. I can easily pull them on and off over a pair of size 11 Muckboots. They also do a made to measure service for a few extra quid.
paddywack12
I received a pair of Hoggs waxed treggings for a christmas present but am thinking of changing them for full length over trousers as I mainly wear lace up boots and the treggings seem too short. Anyone had these?
