pigeon controller
Friday saw us heading for the rape to see if the birds have made the move from the acorns. We were scanning the second field that we intended to look at when the farmer pulled up in the gateway behind us ." You going to shoot these blooming pigeons then " as we looked at field with no pigeon on it. It was covered yesterday he said . We said that we would watch it for an hour or so and shoot if they come back. which he was pleased with and drove off. DB and I just looked at the field in dismay . We decide the walk round the perimeter and look and if we get back to the Disco and there are no birds we will go. As we walked round a few birds started to gather in the trees and on the grass round the edge there were lots of acorns still and pigeon poo , so they have been sitting in the trees feeding on the acorns. When we got back to the Disco we decided to set up . It was a very bright sunny day and looking into the sun you could not see our twevle decoys only the magnet as it moved. We put all the decoys close to the edge as if they were feeding on the acorns not the rape. When the sun started to get covered with slight cloud from the west the birds started to pick up on the decoys and it went mad for a couple of hours and then slowed up as they made there way to roost . We packed up at 15.00 and picked up one hundred and six pigeon so it turned out a great day in the end. Saturday saw us heading out into bright sunshine again and we picked up on some birds flighting very high in the air and tried to follow them but they just dropped in trees round the edges on grass fields . We would pick another flock and they just went further out and did the same all dropping into oaks. We came to another farmers rape and it had a few in the trees but it also has a wood on the one edge and it was full of birds. So we went to the farm and asked if the shoot were in the woods today as they would not want us decoying during the drives etc. No , no shoot today help yourselves ,so we drove throught the wood to get to the best spot and set up on the edge of the rape with our backs to the wood and waited . The first birds back came to the decoys on the rape and others joined them which gave us some great shooting. As the day went on the birds stopped decoying but came in high over us into the wood so we ended up roost shooting till dark. We ended the day with one hundred and seventeen pigeon. You might think where is the dog in the picture, he was picking up birds from out of the wood behind us and when we started to pack up he just went to the Disco totally wacked and would not move. So two, hundred bags off rape fields but not pure rape shooting but I'm not complaining mega weekend.

Aga Man, you a dead right I saw a flock of five hundred birds this morning and another flock of the same size just milling around the fields but with no direction. I've said it before but the " The Forest of Arden is all Oaks" and that's why we get great amounts of birds in our area much to the dismay of our farmers.
