demonwolf444
Thanks guys, I could have it finished today if i tried. All the metal parts are in pretty much now. Could have it near enough finished today if i tried, but just feeling a little bit ill and pathetic. I hope the barrels are OK when it gets to that stage, i really do. Very tempted to go for an oil finish on the stock, boiled linseed oil...Thoughts please.
Underdog
Can you get some birchwood casey true oil? Does a good job and sets quite fast.
welshwarrior
Use a good oil finish always looks nice, don't use TruOil its varnish and nasty looking doesn't belong on guns IMHO.
FalconFN
I haven't had much luck with boiled linseed oil, I can't seem to get a decent finish and although it is waterproof, after a downpour the wood looks dull and feels rough again. I've probably done something wrong but it isn't quite the finish I wad expecting. I like tru oil, although it can be a bit glossy at first, but I'm still looking for the perfect oil. demonwolf444
Thanks guys, on the other one i used napier london gunstock finish kit.. its alright, should be half the price it is though. Got enough left to do the stock, so i may use that again but i want to alkanet oil this one first as its a bit lighter than the other stock. Hammers, had some issues with ordering the hammers, which really could not be helped, so anyway i fired up the mig to see if there was any chance of fixing the original hammers... after a good few hours wasted today. With me behind the welder I'm doubtful any good can be achieved at all. Got bored of filing and left it for a night. Have not done anything to the stock yet. Its sort of finished, there are a couple of wood worm holes i want to fill and some area's i want to sand again before i do any finishing couple of other small things. The front trigger needs a little more clearance as its a bit stiff.
Old farrier
Hi Try warming your oil warm room temperature and wood at that temp aswell small spot of oil on your hand and rub it into the wood untill it disappears then move onto next bit it takes days and days but can give a wonderful finish the pros use a mix they call red oil but never managed to get the recipe Looking good All the best Of
welshwarrior
I make my own stock oil OF has given you a great tip the other is to raise the grain correctly to stop it swelling when wet or oiled.
demonwolf444
I refinished *my Winchester 101 in boiled linseed oil and its done the best job of showing off gain and figure that previously did not exist. Was out in downpour for an afternoon with it the other week and it was just fine. I raised the grain using water and a hair dryer, and warm the oil in the bottom aga drawer, and let it cure next to a heater as the house is always freezing, Hopefully i will see what i can do with the hammers... and get cracked on with finishing i think i will go with oil finish as its what i have to hand. I'll try and take a load of pictures, keep forgetting to bring the camera so pictures have been really sporadic. demonwolf444
Hammers are not actually looking too bad, test fired them on two bits on lead over the nipples ( .22 pellets ) One is okay, the other needs a bit more welding and filing. I figure at this stage they will hold long enough for it to be test fired, ( I'll weld the weak one up a bit more ) the barrels may not survive so there's no point investing in new hammers at this stage. Hoping to begin finishing the stock tonight.
demonwolf444
been filling and finishing, then i realised i still had not done the brass bits around the barrel key. Out comes the chisels. Had to make up a rounded chisel. She works pretty good and with a handle stuck on it would make a good palm chisel however i now just have a hexagonal depression in my palm. Bluntens quickly though but if i was in the work shop it wouldn't matter. While i was at it, did the tear drops around the lock plates, added a touch of class, think these ones done with the palm destroyer look way better than the ones on the boxlock. Just to finish off the teasing, heres one of the stock, obivously i am going to have to go back over where i have chiseled and such and start finishing again another evening. The tiger striping is a bit more subtle and the color is slightly lighter than the box lock at this stage. I think i'm starting to like this one a bit more now, my father thinks i've done a good job on it, and getting praise out of him is almost as hard as getting money out of him, so it must be looking alright. Will carry on finishing and possibly sure up one of the hammers a bit more but i don't think i will do much else to it till it is on ticket and i test the barrels. Even at this stage it could all blow up in my face.

demonwolf444
Cheers fenny if she goes boom successfully. It will be a keeper i think. If not.. i might get some interesting knife blanks out of it. Always a learning curve doing this though.

sandspider
Impressive. Just a thought on stock finishing - I've seen Osmo Polyx finishes recommended for tables, coat hooks and suchlike. A bit more expensive, but fewer coats needed. Not sure whether they might work on a stock?

demonwolf444
Its still being finished, I'm using a trial mixture of oils.. i am going really steady, but its taking on a good finish slowly, i think maybe 8- 10 more coats and I'll be happy.
