saddler
I have an old WW2 manual on military dogs. One of the suggested breeds as army guard dog is the poodle
alexl
Wasnt the poodle was originally a water retrieing dog?
Penelope
Yes it was. If you can find on BBC iplayer the series they did on BBC2 about dogs in the autumn, there is some old black and white film footage of a poodle retrieving duck from water. Looks as though it was from the continent. Wasnt the poodle was originally a water retrieing dog?

figgy
Poodles are a European hunting dog used as a HPR in Germany and a water dog, still a few working strains but not many. My wife has a poodle terrier cross that has a fantastic nose and is game as hell. Little sod has had a few bouts with my cocker spaniel. Won't give in till he gets what he wants. This caused me to look at them for working, some are hard mouthed. Figgy Edited January 22, 2014 by figgy
secretagentmole
Mind it helps if they don't have the lion cut... i can remember a brown standard poodle from when I was kid, thing was trained to do field retrieve, think they actually won a few field trials with it! scotslad
I know 1 estate where the daughter has 2 poodles and there actually pretty well trained, infact far better than her brothers (the owners) 2 suposedly trained gun dogs. Figgy are u sure poodles where ever HPR's,i know they where the french equivelant of retrievers like our lab or IWS but never heard of them being an hpr as that is a completely differnt disciplne Even the curly coat is quite common in more water based dogs, not that different in looking to ur IWS or curly coated retriever, and even the cheakespeare bay ret for all is not curly does look quite similar coat type from a distance as usually has tight waves Are u sure someone won an FT with a poodle? i didn't think they would be allowed as only certain breeds can enter certain trials, i could see a good 1 winning a working test or fun gundog day thing but doubt they would be allowed to enter a ft Edited January 22, 2014 by scotslad

Elby
Many years ago the french used to bring them over to fight bulldogs in England
kent
I don't particularly see an issue in using one, if you take a pure show line from any of the gundog breeds I see about equal chance of success. Obviously its all done for effect on the show but I did like the lab at the kennels who obviously had his boss placed behind the DD team when it ran straight back past them all like it was heading for the hills with its prize. I did laugh as they were all sat bold upright on chairs chatting and Phil said " oh looks like we have a blind one here guys" when a single dove approached

Cranfield
I read somewhere that Phil has been kicked off the show for racist and anti gay remarks http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-25541813 In my teens I shot estuarial ducks with a friend who had a standard poodle as a retriever. The dog was a strong swimmer in the tidal waters and never lost a duck. It was also one of the quietest dogs I have ever seen when shooting, it never made any sound at all. He reckoned he had never heard it bark.

hawkeye
I can remember about 20 years ago a mate of mine had a friend who was a full time gamekeeper and this gamekeeper had a standard poodle as his main gun dog he reckoned it worked better than his lab,s
