wannabe_keeper
I'm looking to buy a pick-up over the next few weeks. I run a small pheasant shoot so need something capable of lugging feed around the farm as well as my pigeon gear. I only have a small budget of £5000 but am a cash buyer. I'm hoping to pick up a bargain on eBay/Gumtree or something like that. What does everyone recommend? I'm looking at the older L200's, Hilux, Navara or Ford Ranger. Probably a pre-2004 model to fit my budget - if that's do-able. Any recommendations welcome.
bluesj
I wouldn't recommend you go for an older l200 or navara you could be buying your self a lot of aggro!Hi lux would be the best but you would get a newer better nick ranger for the same money
wickedwickedmotox
Go for a hilux. Be carefull with scammers on ebay or gumtree, can tell who they are as they generally can only be contacted via email and not by phone!
Sean Richo
Ford Ranger good reliable vehicle
al4x
Whatever you get buy on condition and history there are plenty of abused money pits about but vice versa some very good trucks that have been used like cars
-Mongrel-
Hilux is expensive because they are good and Top Gear showed that and made them even more popular. My mates a local mechanic and when I was considering them he was pushing the Ford Ranger or Mazda B2500, same engine apparently.
michufc
Hilux for the reliability factor I used to be a mechanic and the local keepers swore by them
Bows
You will get a good condition Ford Ranger for £5000. Stay away from the older l200 and navara as mentioned above.

Sitinhide
Can't go wrong with a Ranger, easy to maintain and very reliable, L200 and Navara can be a bit of a money pit
Malik
A few of you saying stay away from the older L200s. Out of curiosity, what goes wrong with the older L200s? I have the newer one and haven't had a problem yet, but that is the newer shape.
Fib new
I'm into land rovers and love my 90 pick-up with canopy. I know people on here don't like 'm, but I can't fault mine up till now. Other than that my net would be on anything Toyota.

kent
Yeah, buy a Landrover you can teach yourself how to be a mechanic during the period of ownership LOL.
ferguson_tom
For that price range a Ford Ranger would be my choice.
four-wheel-drive
I think that I would go for a Ford Ranger for no other reason than I like the look of them and from what I have seen people do seem to rate them as being good. wannabe_keeper
Looks like a Ranger it is! I was swaying towards one anyway which is good. I would go for a landy but i'm trying to get the best of both worlds... Something that is nice to drive on the road as well as capable of off road duties. Unfortunately most of the defenders only fulfil the later criteria

al4x
A few of you saying stay away from the older L200s. Out of curiosity, what goes wrong with the older L200s? I have the newer one and haven't had a problem yet, but that is the newer shape. arround 03 they had head issues but that isn't a massive issue the harmonic damper on the crank pulley is a favourite but again its £150 to fix, other than that they have the same issues as most pickups mostly regarding their use. But they are relatively cheap hiluxes you would get a shed for your 5k whereas L200 you would get a pristine low mileage old shape for 5K Rangers I find are pretty agricultural when you are on the road and they may be reasonably reliable but certainly still have their problems if you use them hard. Don't worry to much about it.we have one on the farm that has been shuddering like that for 90,000 miles its now on 215,000 and still going strong. Guest rimotu66
If you can get a Hilux for your budget go for it, we have a Ranger at work and I would not want to drive long distances as I find it uncomfy and there is next to no leg room in the back (and I'm a short ***), I suggest having a drive in one before you decide. To the L200 (and similar) knockers, what years should the OP look at and what years to avoid? Ive also heard of L200's breaking cranks and rods??? Land Rovers are a love or hate car, I used to love my Series 2 and 3 when I was younger as I didn't mind having my bones shaken and knuckles skinned but I wouldn't touch one now. I am going to be in the same situation as you soon and on a similar budget so am interested in this thread also. If you have limited knowledge of motors then please take a mechanic with you even if you have to pay him, could save you a fortune in the future. Good luck
Alycidon
I know its not a pick up but a series 2 Discovery TD5 works well when shod with all terrain or mud terrain tyres. Cheaper than Defender, just as practical. Got a mega miles (262,000) tatty 03 plate ES Auto deisel for sale if you want one. Have used it for everything from motorway work, pulling a trailer, hauling wheat out to pens, gunship etc for last 5 years. A
