My sister as a 07 plate Mitsubishi outlander petrol. It has this problem with hesitancy in most gears when you put your foot down the car doesn't pick up immediately and is hesitant as if dying and then takes off again. It doesn't do it all the time might be ok for a week or two and then it will be playing up for a couple of days before clearing again. If its in a high gear and you drop it down a notch or two it usually picks up so it is more prevalent under load. I've ruled out the Maf sensor and its had a recent fuel filter. If when its doing it you disengage the clutch the revs immediately return..... any one have any clues what I should check next.?

I hate these modern cars with their on board computers and sensors etc. I remember when you could get every part you needed at Halfords and if it started raining when you were fitting it you could get under the bonnet and in the engine bay with it!

Thanks,

Mike

check with code reader....could still be MAF meter..(unless you swapped with known good one) also electrical...coils..ht leads..etc

under load do you hear a popping sound in the air intake....

Thats what id go for first. quick clean with some contact cleaner sometimes work. try disconnecting it and see it it makes any difference.

I'm betting maf I could look fine to the eye but need a diagnostic check I could be down to a rubed or broken wire ie not getting full power or a dodgy sensors she hasn't run it out of fuel since the fuel filter has she as I had this a few times with differ vechle s

did this problem occur before the fuel filter change ?

yes it did... I also disconnected the MAF when it was running and the car stopped, I then cleaned it and had it tested...and its its fine.

I will get her to have it looked at by the Mitsubishi dealer..

Would a faulty oxygen sensor cause these symptoms.

Cheers

Thanks guys for all the replies...she has had a local home tune guy out this morning he plugged in his fault code reader and it showed the cam position sensor is faulty.. apparently when they deteriorate they can sometimes work and sometimes not and the CPU will adjust fuel provision...This explains why it runs well for a time and then poorly...

Downside...£144 for a OE part....or £65 for a copy....OUCH.
