Not much known about him really. He apparently followed his father into the Roman army, was an early Christian and was put to death because he would not turn against the Christians when the Emporer was persecuting them. He was born in a place that became part of Turkey.

St. George was born in Lydda, Roman Palastine. He was of Greek Christian extraction and served as an Officer in the Roman Army. He is the patron saint of Soldiers, Boy Scouts and half a dozen or more countries.

His father was Gerontius, a Greek Christian] fromCappadocia, and an official in the Roman army. His mother, Polychronia was a local GreekChristian of Palestine.[3] Saint George became an officer in the Roman army in the Guard ofDiocletian. In hagiography, Saint George is one of the most venerated saints in the Catholic(Western and Eastern Rites), Anglican, Eastern Orthodox, and the Oriental Orthodox churches. He is immortalized in the tale of Saint George and the Dragon and is one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers. His memorial is celebrated on 23 April, and he is regarded as one of the most prominent military saints.
