michufc
Hi to all I am toying with the idea of changing my 90 pickup for something like the l200 or ranger 4 doors as I am at the moment using two cars to take the spaniels out for family walks as my other car is brand new and not suitable for wet dogs My 90 is roughly worth £2500 so would be looking for something of the same value to do a swap sort of thing or should I just keep it your thoughts would be appreciated as I am in limbo at the moment Cheers mike Edited March 5, 2014 by michufc
countryman
I have had many Land Rovers and an L200, the Mitsubishi will not be as good off road as the landy but the L200 will be cheaper to run and more practical than your 90, all so the L200 wont suffer with the rot like landys do, your biggest problem is your budget, it does put you in the dodgy zone. michufc
As far as off roading goes it's just lamping that I go on grass fields so I would hope the l200 should be ok with that as I don't go greenlaning or anything would it be ok for this
subsonicnat
Would concur on the l200 mate.
countryman
On my L200 i had all terrain tyres, these were fine for general field work, you will find it a lot user friendly than your 90, things like good heater, no water leaks in side, no oil marks left on your drive when you pull away in the morning, the list goes on. countryman
Just had another thought, if you do look at the L200 give it a good caning on the test drive to see if any sensors kick in on the engine, they have an in built one that will cut the the power to the engine if something is wrong, it wont stop the engine but you will notice it, its not the end of the world but it will need to be plugged into a diagnostic at the garage, some times it can be cleared there and then. chunkyed
Fancy swapping the 90 for a Nova. I can put an l200 badge on it and some off road tyres? Haha
jgguinness
My thoughts on this would be keep the Landy. You wont loose money on the Landy and its very DIY friendly for maintenance and servicing. Rot wise most of the body is ally so its fine, apart from the doors, bulkhead and the chassis. What condition are these like on yours?? I saw an L200 the other day, 52 plate and the arches and parts of the rear tub were rotten.

michufc
The condition of my Landy rot wise is not bad at all looking at some of the sheds on eBay and mine is much better and it went through its mot with no advise notes and the heater works on mine and I have sorted the water coming in as well now. Scully
Spoke to two l200 owners prior to buying my Landrover, and both said they wouldnt have another. The L200 was 10 year old and looked bloody smart to be honest, but the Landrover was 40 year old and looked the dogs danglies. I decided the L200 wouldnt look as good another 30 years down the line. bluesj
How about a Toyota surf, You get five seats and a heater that works, cheaper to run that a 90 and you don't get the engine problems that some l200s have plus loads around at your budget. only possible down side is that you don't get a separate load area. michufc
I have looked at the surfs but ruled them out due to no separate load area I was also looking at things like the ranger and hilux as well
billytheghillie
its a no brainer--------L200
Paul223
Wouldn't have a L200
michufc
What would you go for paul223 if you were to choose
Paul223
I have a defender Defenders hold the money quite well, as do hilux L200's will drop in value If your sat in the driving seat all day then yeah a defender is a pain The 4d56 engine in the l200 has been redesigned several times, however the crank and block are the same as they were 30+ years ago, the cranks don't hold up to the modern power and torque levels and failure is common, if it's been serviced very well with the correct spec oil then it'll most likely be fine, if not leave it where it is
michufc
I have spent quite a lot of time on my 90 converting it to a pickup re spraying and sorting out all the **** from the previous owner and with having two little kids and three spaniels to train it's the tinkering time that is a major consideration for this change vehicle. But that said it still makes me smile when I drive it I am really torn
Blunderbust
Would not have either .
Blackbart
Landy's are great off road...... That's it really, so if you live somewhere with no roads, no rain, no bumps and is warm most of the time then an old 90 is perfect. On the other hand if you have to drive on roads, live somewhere it rains and is often cold then you would be much more comfortable in a l200
al4x
I have a defender Defenders hold the money quite well, as do hilux L200's will drop in value If your sat in the driving seat all day then yeah a defender is a pain The 4d56 engine in the l200 has been redesigned several times, however the crank and block are the same as they were 30+ years ago, the cranks don't hold up to the modern power and torque levels and failure is common, if it's been serviced very well with the correct spec oil then it'll most likely be fine, if not leave it where it is That's almost comical a Landy person talking about unchanged engineering In this case as a second vehicle you may be best with the Landy. I choose a pickup as it's day to day transport and I do a fair mileage. I've not had crank problems with mine and I've done 120k plus miles in different ones or had a sensor problem. Just normal maintenance. I 'll have another as I can't justify spending 50% more for the equivalent hilux
Paul223
There's nowt wrong with unchanged engineering ........... as long as it works, goes to show how good the original design was, I service a 300tdi with 400k on the clock and quite a few with 250+k, they are working / farm vehicles used for towing a lot of the time, the owners rarely stick to the service regime. All going strong! I wonder how many L200's would have been scrapped doing the same work, they break regularly enough just being used for commuting
al4x
Come on the average old landrover is as original as triggers broom
Paul223
As far as I know mainly original running gear, I've replaced a transfer box on one and a gear box in another, I'd be surprised if they all haven't had head gaskets Despite the millage I'm quite sure they're all running original power plants, what do you think they are L200's?
