Skeet Vests

I normally shoot in my jacket which has large front pockets which will hold around 100 carts, but after shooting yesterday in the beautiful sunshine ive decided i may need to invest in a skeet vest, it was a tad warm in my jacket.

How many carts does the average vest hold? Id like to be able to just fill my pockets and take the gun rather than taking my cartridge bag. On average i do around 150 on a round so this would be the ideal number....

The other option maybe to get a large hip pouch.

Opinions on vest vs pouch and which vests are worth a look would be much appreciated.

The other option maybe to get a large hip pouch. :good: I use one of these for game/pigeon shooting and it is brilliant. Fast reloading and will hold 150 easily.

Had to 'modify' the belt system to make it hang right with a full load of cartridges. (Sewing job)!

Get yourself down to Aldi, buy one of their fishing bags, last seen at £4.99, this will carry all your extra cartridges, bottle of water, shooting glasses and waterproofs, should you need them. If you decide to fill the skeet vest pockets with 150 cartridges, you may find that you become somewhat round shouldered and try to avoid shooting any targets like rabbits or anything below you. Having adopted a weight forward stance, you may never stand upright again !!!

As others have suggested a cartridge bag to use alongside a vest is probably the best option as you can then carry other bits and bobs in it too. I have a top gun skeet vest with 2 large cartridge pockets either side and while I have no doubt I could get 150 carts in the pockets I wouldn't want to wear it with them in there lol. I usually only use the inner most of the 2 pockets either side with a box emptied into each.

I have a Musto vest and the bulge pockets at the front are divided into two, I'm guessing that's so you can have 25 in each totalling 100, but to be honest anything more than 50 starts to feel heavy and cumbersome. At the start of a shoot fill each of the pockets with 25 and 100 in my little cartrigdge bag, 150 done! :)

Thanks guys, looks like i may have to give in and carry a cartridge bag too. I was just hoping to keep kit to a minimum as i find things more enjoyable when you don't have to cart extra kit around. I will concede my jacket is pretty heavy with 100 carts in so 150 may be to much.

Anyone else use a large hip pouch? I was thinking this might be easier to manage as it wont be hanging off my shoulders.

There is a thread on PW (THE OFFICIAL PW FAT OFF THREAD) at the moment

where a number of us are trying to lose a lump in front of us, and there you are putting one in front of you or at least on hips.

Haha good point. Let me re-address the first post:

What skeet vest do people recommend?

Hi Greg.L, there are loads on the market so whatever takes your eye really and all at different budgets its hard to pin down anything specific, in my previous post I mentioned I had a Musto and the quality is excellent and very robust. One little thing it doesn't have is a breast pocket which would have been perfect for your score card and pen but it's not a massive issue but something to consider.

Not sure if all vests have them I know Musto do and some Beretta ones they have a pouch in the shoulders where the gun mounts so you can put pads in to cushion the recoil, mine came with one but know Beretta sell them separately (can easily find them on the web),

Hope this helps,

My browning vest can easily hold 100 cartridges in the front pockets and another couple of boxes can be slipped in the mesh pocket on the rear of the vest also helps balance things out abit. I've also got a beretta vest but the pockets are a lot smaller on that probably 40 cartridges maximum in each front pocket.

I use a Hatsan Skeet Vest, the pockets only hold 70m 32g cartridges and the Zip jams other than that it is OK.

I have had it 3 weeks now and it has only had to go back to the supplier the once  .

I believe Beretta and Browning have a better 2nd hand value.

I use both a Musto vest and a Beretta belt and pouch. In the summer when its warm I use the pouch, rest of time the vest or a Musto shooting coat. The pouch is great for a long day like at comps as the weight isn't as tiring round your hips.

Figgy
