vmobiler1
if poncing around in a shiny clean chrome blinged mummy mobile with 20inch wheels is important to you than sounds like the perfect car. I'll take a hilux any day. I said that .... until I bought one. It does everything I want it to and looks nice too. I keep all my possessions clean and tiny, my guns are always clean and so is my truck, I would happily take it anywhere on a farm to go shooting. If I had a Hilux it would also be clean and shiny and probably have 20 inch wheels on it too. If you are going to skint yourself to buy one I woud not advise it as they are not cheap to run, when something goes wrong its not £50-£100 its £350-£500 but you must remember a hilux is may £20k ish new, the vogue is far more than that and parts, servicing and running cost all go with it. Regards A HAPPY clean and shiny blinged up mummy mobile with 22inch wheels owner.
Biffo
Well, thanks for all the replies folks, especially from those that own an L322, all of which I've read with interest. I'd probably do between 3k and 5k miles a year in it, would use it to tow a horse trailer and horse half a dozen time a year, to get to my shooting perms (a couple of miles only), other than that it would be poncing around enjoying the luxury. The reliability does worry me a little, more because I understand some repairs need the body off ??

robbiep
No, the L322 does NOT need the body off for jobs. The Range Rover Sport and Disco 3 need body off for various jobs though
Catweazle
The P38 is supposed to have the body off to replace the front-to-rear brake pipe, which is just ordinary painted steel. You'd think that on a £50k plus car the brake pipes would have been made of something better. The crank position sensor, which is somewhat vital, is situated towards the bottom of the engine where it gets covered in salt spray and mud and deep water, and just has ordinary spade connectors. Rubbish design. On the other hand, the chassis and transmission is built like a tanks, and once I ditched the 18" wheels for 16" and put BFG Muds on it, it is surprisingly good off-road ( for a 2.5 ton vehicle ). It's thirsty as a toons fan on a stag night and underpowered for a 4.6 V8, but it has low ratio. I have read that the P38 is favoured over the later models by hardcore offroaders because of the solid axle, but I can't see any advantage and the later engines are much better. Sorry for the off-topic, might be of interest to someone, one day.
four-wheel-drive
Years ago all cars had copper brake pipes never rust or corrode then some cleaver person thought why do we not save a few pence and make them out of steel that will rist and could end up in people crashing and killing people but what the hell we can save money on it and perhaps make some extra profit. As for the thing about solid axles it all about keeping all four wheels in contact with the ground if you then have lockers that means all wheel drive not wheels spinning in mid air. Harnser
My son in law has just bought a brand new range rover Mayfair . A fabulous ,fabulous car . But as he says he wouldn't want to own one out side the warranty period . Harnser
Gordon R
My eldest considered one, until I talked him out of it. He got a big horsepower Volkswagen Toureg - fairly rapid, more economical and better car for the money.
al4x
The answer to the question lies in how deep your pockets are This is the best answer, they are relatively cheap because the running costs and maintenance are high. As long as you are prepared they are quite a machine
webber
Mrs. webber bought me a pre owned RR Vogue for Christmas. So far just a problem with a coil pack which can happen with any petrol vehicle. Its an absolute dream to drive. webber

Yes you are right . But that's the down side of buying a new car . None of them are worth what you pay for them . He will proberbly keep it for a couple of years and sell it on or buy another and bite the bullet on the loss . The more you pay for a new car the more you lose .If nobody bought a new car then there would be no second hand cars on the market . webber
John - but you are happy to mend them. That's true, but I do own a garage which is run by young webber who is a very experienced Autogas Technician and 4x4 specialist. He does specialise in Range Rovers, but you name it, and we see it on the ramps. All brands breakdown from time to time, each vehicle has an achilies heal. The problem is luxury vehicles are inherantly complicated, which generally means big bills. webber

If I had to have one I'd go second hand and by some land with the 20k!
SEshooter
The way I see it is if you can afford a 80 to 90 grand range and can afford to loose 20 grand every 3 years then why the hell not.
