I bought a Rolex Submariner for £180.00 in 1977 which I wear every day and I have it serviced about every five years, when it gets dirty I wash it under the tap, tough as old boots and always looks as good as new, however being a mechanical movement it is not as accurate as quartz. I also have a Rolex Air King that I bought for £20.00 from a junk shop in 1984 had it refurbished by Rolex and use this for best. The price that you would have to pay for one today, would frighten me to death!

Both amazing bargains even when you bought them. Well done.

If you want dead accurate time keeping, buy something linked to the Atomic clock. Pateks are better timekeepers than Rolexes, but having to adjust the time once a week is a 'hardship' more than worth suffering for the quality and styling.

I have to disagree with your there to be honest... Rolex movements are made in house and are among the finest and most accurate of the Swiss movements The Oyster perpetual among them the best and most precise in its field.

If you are buying a top Marque Auto then you would normally buy a auto winder to keep it running 24/7 you will possibly need to reset the Rolex once every six months.

Both are fine manufacturers though

Not wanting to derail this thread but hopefully of some use to others.

I have an Omega Seamaster and looking to PX against a Omega Ocean Planet, down here in Cornwall there is not a shop around to do it, so will have to be done online. Having never delt with the likes of Watch Finder etc. any recommendations of who to use?

You are never going to get a good deal PX. Your watch will have to be serviced (cost) perhaps repaired (cost) before being advertised for re-sale.

I have always disposed of watches privately in the past, on ebay admittedly, 25 - 30 % more than offered in the shop. I've then either bought at Auction or stuffed my pockets with cash and spent a day in Cheltenham, Cirencester or Bath searching out the bargains...its amazing what discounts you can achieve when you flop your wad on the counter.

If you must exchange or sell try these..

Well after much deliberation I bought and have had my watch delivered.

I was under budget, I just found the one I liked, the fact I've saved a bit is purely a bonus!

I see that you have impeccable taste, because it looks like a real classy item. :cool1:

I've been thinking of getting a nice watch for myself.

Can somebody answer, this watch for example; http://www.austinkaye.co.uk/Omega-Gents-Vintage-Seamaster-Calendar-steel-autom-5681-p.aspx

Why is it so much cheaper than a modern second-hand (no pun intended) model? Will it go up in price over time? Or is it only the modern models that do? Does having paperwork missing on an old model like this matter?

I bought a newTag Heuer Carrera Calibre S 2 years ago for a great price with alligator skin wrist strap...The same model of watch is now £1k more expensive!

Not sure what the second hand value is but the prices new are increasing. I wanted to buy the wife the same brand for her 30th this year but the budget wont allow with the increased prices.

Try Swiss watch trader on the web. I know him through work. Tell him Gavin sent you!

I've been sniffing round an Oris recently.

Just got home and remembered I had an old watch of my Grandad's in the shed. Just dug it out (literally) and it's an Oris. It's actually quite nice, plain and understated. Now to try and get some background on it...

It doesn't work, it sticks when turning the hour hands :(

I'm sure it's worth nowt, but i'd quite like to get it cleaned up and working again. It's the only thing of my Grandad's I have. Although, probably change to a nice brown leather strap.

It's currently ticking, second hand moving and it's keeping time...

Huffhuff, that's a very nice watch. I'd also change to a leather strap. I have skinny wrists, so I prefer very slimline watches. Though tbh I don't really wear one at all. Used to have a combat Casio, £5-10 at argos and very hard to kill. For posh occasions I have a rotary. Aspire to one day own a breitling though.

Another nice watch. Most of these threads are all about the massive blinged up chrono's, so this makes a nice change.

I will dig mine out later a get a picture up.

I found it incredibly difficult to find an antithesis of the bling chrono that I liked, hence the saving I made, for something that is 'me'.

Get a pic up, I'm a complete newbie to watches after 40 years, but I can see my collection growing somewhat!

I bought a Rolex gmt 1 in 1993 for 1050 second hand . Sold it in 2011 for 2750 so I could take my daughter on a diving holiday . Seemed stupid to have such a luxury item . Had a great holiday but regret losing my roller sometimes .

I wouldn't hesitate to do what you did, worth more than the Rolex anyday.
